Superb Parrot

I’m lucky enough to share my home with these incredibly beautiful parrots. So far this breeding season I’ve found 3 different pairs all with nestlings.

The reason I’m so excited about this discovery is new research has shown the superb parrot is incredibly particular with nest hollows, this means only 0.5% of tree hollows are good enough for nesting.

Unfortunately this means superb parrots are on the threatened species list with less than 20,000 left in the wild…

This year on our property we’ll be planting 300 plants including trees and shrubs that are recourses for both superb parrots and other native species.

An interesting fact I’ve learnt recently that makes perfect sense. The Northern variant of Koalas are less fluffy especially their ears. This is to accommodate the warmer weather, unlike their Fluffier relatives down south, who need the fluff to stay warm. 🐨

NORTHERN NAILTAIL WALLABY

Onychogalea unguifera

The northern or sandy nail-tail wallaby possess incisors and a dark growth resembling a fingernail or h***y spur beneath a crest of fur at the end of tail.

This claw-like feature of the tail is unique amongst the marsupials and an exceptional characteristic for any mammal, and this species bears the most prominent and developed tail nail of the genus.

Conservation Status:
NT- Near Threatened
QLD- Least Concern

🧡CENTRAL NETTED DRAGON 🧡(Ctenophorus nuchalis)

These gorgeous little dragons are native to Australia and are found throughout the desert plains of Western Australia, the Northern Territory, Western Queensland and New South Wales.

These cheeky burrowing dragons communicate with other members of their species by bobbing their heads and waving their legs.

The Quokka is the only mammal which is native to Rottnest Island and can be found almost everywhere on the Island. It is mainly nocturnal.

Conservation Status:

Quokkas are listed as Vulnerable under ICUN (2014).
This is due to predation by feral animals (cats and foxes), altered fire patterns and habitat loss.

All Rottnest Island’s fauna is protected under the Rottnest Island Authority Act 1987.
