Just back from the Birdlife Australia Photography Conference. What a great event. Even better when you get to hang out and shoot for a while with the amazing !

Thanks for the great presentation, and especially thank you for your engagement with the younger peeps at the conference, they are all buzzing!

Red-tailed Black-Cockatoo.

Quiet moments often reveal the most character. High-key light softens the scene,
but the posture says everything.

Foreground grasses creating soft layers. Clean background separation.
Strong eye contact and elegant head angle.

Bush Stone-curlew.

Stillness. Patience. Presence.

Sometimes portrait photography isn’t about getting closer, it’s about getting lower and letting the subject breathe.

Tiny Dancer

Southern Emu-wren.

Quiet, skittish, and hard to capture. I was ecstatic to see an emu-wren being brave in the late afternoon sun.

Strike a Pose.

Red-backed Fairywren.

These aren’t the most common fairywren around here, it was a nice surprise to see one pop into my field of view. This was a shy little guy, so I was happy to get a quick snap before he went into hiding.

We are family.

Southern Cassowaries.

We had a recent trip up north trying to capture some of these prehistoric beauties. After not seeing any the first couple of days, our confidence was at a new low…but then we managed to see nearly ten different Casswowaries across our trip. Well worth it!

The Odd Couple.

Pied Oystercatcher & Beach Stone-curlew.

Having a Beach Stone-curlew pop up was a brilliant surprise — they’re not the easiest birds to track down around here. Its call made me think something interesting might be about to kick off… and sure enough, along strutted a Pied Oystercatcher. The two of them together put on a bit of a Benny Hill routine, I’m happy I managed to get a shot or two in between the chuckling.
