I love when grooms are comfortable enough to show their true emotions on their wedding day. It’s a beautiful thing to capture and witness and just reinforces the love that flows between the family and newly married couple.

It’s pretty special when you get asked to photograph friends weddings. It’s almost easier as you know them, often their family and definitely some of their guests. Everyone seems a little more relaxed and candid. Which I think sometimes gives me the best shots.

We got so lucky with the weather too. It bucketed down literally minutes before their outdoor ceremony at the Botanic gardens.

There’s always a rough guide to how weddings should work, but the magic happens when you make them really yours.

Like Ellie & Jake who cut their wedding cake with a sword, sang a traditional family song instead of a first dance, and later… a quiet pause under the fairy lights when the night finally slowed down (okay lots of couples do this one - but how gorgeous are they?!).

It’s always the moments that feel most special to you that stay with you long after the day is done.

When I met Ellie the week before the wedding, the garden was only just starting to bloom. By the time the wedding day arrived, it had completely transformed — full of colour and the perfect backdrop for the bridesmaids and all those beautiful flowers.

The ceremony felt really personal. Family played the music as Ellie walked in with her dad following the bagpipes. There were heartfelt vows, rings brought by Ellie’s brother and Jake’s sister read Oh, the Places You’ll Go, which felt like such a fitting way to mark the start of their next chapter.

Planning a wedding from the other side of the world is no small feat, but with the help of Ellie’s mum, Ellie & Jake were able to celebrate their marriage surrounded by the people who’ve shaped their lives along the way.

Friends from childhood, more recent friendships formed through work and military life, and family both by blood and by the places they’ve called home — all gathered in one place.

It was a beautiful day, not just celebrating their love, but giving thanks for the support, friendship and community they’ve found across the world. And that is pretty special in my books.

The most nerve wracking shot I try to get on your wedding day is walking down the aisle. I guess it’s nerve wracking for the person waiting too 😂. But gee whizz, I’m glad when I get it! Probably one of my favourite shots of the day.
