Hi,
Living in south eastern Australia near Namadgi National Park and Kosciuszko erI am Canberra born and live in an area with quick access to pollution free dKark skies. Since seeing my first Aurora Australis in 1989 when I was living in Hobart Tasmania, one that filled half the heavens with a visible pink/red glow that I mistakenly first thought was the glow of a distant bushfire, I have develope

d an interest for photographing the aurora. With the ready availability of critical information about solar weather available on-line and collected by the DSCOVR spacecraft, it is possible to anticipate the arrival of conditions favourable to the aurora more accurately. Applying this information, it took nearly a year before I captured by first Aurora Australis from just south of Canberra on 23 June 2015, in minus 2 degrees at 5.00 am in the morning. This featured in an article in the Canberra Times: http://www.canberratimes.com.au/…/like-curtains-being-ruffl…. This aurora was visible clearly to the naked eye with reddish/pink beams visible to the side of Mt Tennent, near Tharwa in the ACT. SInce then, another of my aurora shots has been published in the Canberra Times: http://www.canberratimes.com.au/…/stunning-skyfirelike-auro…
My shots are printed with quality ink intended to last around 100 years without fading so the impact of the stunning image is preserved.

The Ghosties are still on!

This is a very late set of fresh clumps of ghost fungi in the Newcastle Central Coast areas.

Look in areas with Banksia communities.

Phone ahots showing the flow and they look like during the day.

My camera shots to follow in a few days.

Good luck hunting!

I am on a bit of a roll tonight with images from 8/9 June 2026 taken under perfect dark skies of the Monaro. I just loved this amazing Snow gum and captured the Milky Way as it moved over the tree. The Carina nebula can be seen as the pink purple colours nestled above the tree under the Southern Cross.

Feeling like the boy who cried wolf right now!

I decided to head down to a private permission in the Snowy Mountains to hopefully capture the aurora that was forecast to arrive on 8/9 June.

It was freezing cold and as we all know the big aurora did not eventuate, in fact only a modest bump was recorded last night.

Anyway, I had decided to take advantage of the clear skies and shot a number of different scenes, this one, just as the first quarter moon rose just after mid night shows the orange glow of the moonlight illuminating the trunk of this grand old snow gum.

I also shot some deep sky objects with my telescope - the Sombrero Galaxy and the Triffid Nebula, these are also attached although I am awaiting a new computer to handle the new software so had to settle for compromise processing (as I was keen to see how they turned out!).

I am sorry about the false alerts, it seems we have a lot to learn about predicting alignment of solar activity occurring on the Sun with our own planet and emission speeds of solar material that triggers aurora!

I can only say that I thought it was going to happen hence my trip!

Still having lovely dark skies to image in is a real blessing and I am grateful!

Planetary "alignment" of 3 naked eye planets 8 June 2026, Monaro area

There is a beautiful alignment occurring this month with 3 of the naked eye planets visible in the early evening sky (technically 4 planets are visible in my image!).

As it was very windy (and cold!) I had to shot this at 1/20th of a second to slow the windmill blades down, at a high ISO of 6400 using a Nikkor 50 mm lens on my Nikon D850 at f2.

The first image shows the scene, the second is labelled to identify the respective planets.

Venus will move even closer to Jupiter tonight but I am not sure whether the weather will be cooperative.

More shots to come from my latest aurora chase. Did I get aurora or not despite the fact the latest CME did no arrive.
