Lyle's Lens

Lyle's Lens I build the visual evidence that justifies the value of elite sports programmes โ€” for funders, sponsors, and the boards that decide what gets renewed.

Looking to 2032.

Marcelle Keet. National Pathways Coach, Hockey Australia. 148 caps in field hockey for South Africa. 53 in water polo. Paris Olympics coaching staff.

A woman who has lived elite performance at its highest level, and is now shaping the next generation of Australian female hockey players into better athletes and better people.

The authority. The empathy. The quality of human connection that makes athletes trust the person standing in front of them. Qualities not apparent on a CV. And they don't appear in most game-day photographs.

They have to be drawn out: recognised, constructed, and made visible.

That is what this shoot was built to do.

My job is to recognise when the authority and the humanity are present, and make them visible to the people who need to see them.

That is the work.

A defender's job is to make danger disappear.

No goals = no headlines. That's the role. Lucy Nash has done that work and national selectors noticed. Jillaroos Under-21 squad, and Hockey One. She got there on performance.

These portraits are an extension of elite performance. A commercial argument for athletes earlier in their pathway.

That is what my work is built to do.

The goalkeeper is the only athlete on the field whose face disappears when the pressure arrives.

Behind the mask, there is no team. No cover. No margin for error.
Only her.

Meet Alyssa Smith. Hockeyroos training squad. Canberra Chill. ACT U21 captain. Stepped into local senior club hockey (CL1) at age 13. Known for one thing above all else โ€” composure when it counts most.

Swipe to see the person behind the mask.

Elite identity is not a highlight reel. It is a person โ€” with a history, a discipline, and a presence that exists long before the cameras arrive at a match.

That is what my series is here to document.

. โ€” NFSA Cult Classics, Canberra.

The persona is intentional.
What Iโ€™m after is the moment beyond that.
The human inside, choosing to be seen.
That doesnโ€™t happen with a camera.
It happens before the shutter.
Access. Presence. Trust.
The image is just the record of that.
