I travelled to Mongolia earlier this year to visit with the Tsaatan, a small community of nomadic reindeer herding families. A truly life changing experience, we travelled by horseback for 2 days high up into the subarctic taiga of northern Mongolia’s Khövsgöl Province. I will never be able to do justice and explain in words the Darkhad horses who escorted us through the most varied terrain. We went from the flat, wide-open space of the steppe through rivers and boggy ground, through wildflowers and into forests. From soft ground underfoot to granite rocks that if you didn’t experience it yourself you would question how it was at all possible.
The nature of the trip, travelling with the bare essentials and weight restricted, meant I left my trusty zoom lens at home. However, I think the wide-angle images in this year’s calendar give you an idea of the essence of the time I spent in Mongolia. A country which defies boundless, its immense scale still confounds me. There are 3 images of reindeers inside the calendar - including July (think Christmas in July!) and obviously December and the remainder are images of either the Darkhad horses who guided us on our adventure or other free roaming horses encountered during our journey.
This year I’ll be gifting $5 from every calendar sold back to the Mongolian herding families.
