Mushroom & Photography Expedition – Kunanyi/Mount Wellington

Spend a couple of hours scouting for fungi along the trail, and focus on skills for discovering and photographing amazing fungi. You’ll get the opportunity to work on developing a toolkit for finding fungi by habitat type and touch on the parts of mushroom identification and biodiversity science.

Guiding your experience is Yoav Barness, the force behind Giant Tree Expeditions , whose passion for deep noticing turns a simple walk into a sensory expedition. You can read more about him here: https://giant-trees.com/our-story/
Yoav will be joined by mycospotter extraordinaire Kim Ogden from Elysian Photography, who will guide you through capturing fungi, whether you’re shooting with a DSLR or your smartphone. Her photographic work is amazing.

Together they’ll guide you through a rainforest mushroom appreciation expedition within the spectacular rainforests of the Kunanyi/ Mount Wellington Range. Noticing, photographing, and connecting with the forest in a whole new way.

It's always a bonus finding these little Mycena interrupta (pixie's parasols) on a fungi walk, so to find little clusters of them popping up all along my walk on Monday certainly added an extra pop of pleasure to what was a fruitful spotting day.

The spectacular blue caps of this tiny wood-inhabiting species appears in small troops on rotting logs in rainforest, eucalypt forest and Nothofagus (beech) forest.

✨ Ethereal ✨

I’m so excited to share that Elysian Photography has been selected for inclusion in the Mount Roland Art Prize – “Fragility” Exhibition at Sheffield Art Gallery.

My entry, 'Ethereal', captures the delicate presence of fungi that exist for only a fleeting moment in time. Small and easily destroyed, these organisms reflect the vulnerability of our ecosystems — where unseen life plays vital, essential roles. This work is an invitation to pause… to notice what is often overlooked, yet deeply important to environmental balance.

This exhibition is a People’s Choice Award, which means your vote matters. I would absolutely love for you to visit, explore all of the wonderful artworks on display, and if this piece speaks to you, cast your vote for Ethereal.

Fragility lives in the quietest places. Sometimes we just need to slow down enough to see it. 🌿
