Instead of rushing straight home from the Pilbara in October 2025, we decided to slow things down and check out a few spots we’ve always driven past.

From quiet bush camps at Peace Gorge to historic places like Nannine, plus a few unexpected roadside stops — it turned into a great couple of days on the road.

Sometimes it’s worth taking the long way… even when you’re already on the highway.

Towards the end of holiday last October we stopped in at some of the great water holes of the Pilbara trip exploring Running Waters, Upper Carawine Gorge and Carawine Gorge.
Warm water, bird life, rough 4WD tracks and some classic Pilbara scenery along the way.
Definitely a spot worth slowing down for.

In October 2025 we spent three days off-grid in Karlamilyi (Rudall River) National Park—a stunning, rarely visited corner of Western Australia’s Pilbara. Starting from Punmu, we travelled ~615km through remote tracks, guided past Telfer Mine, overnighted at Coolbro Creek, then travelled the Graphite Valley Track, and then to the breath-taking Desert Queens Baths. We continued north to Moses Chair Track, through Nifty Copper Mine, Woodie Woodie Mine, and finished at Running Waters.

Karlamilyi National Park is WA’s largest and protects traditional Martu country. It features unique ecosystems, historic mines, and ancient landscapes. Permits are not required, but be prepared for true wilderness.

In October 2025 we tackled the Nyangumarta Highway (also known as the Kidson Track), we filled up the tanks at the Sandfire Roadhouse and made our way across the desert to Punmu in remote Western Australia, all up just over 600km.

We travelled this isolated outback track using a GoPro mounted inside the vehicle, capturing the journey through the windscreen — giving a true driver’s view of the terrain. The video also includes still photography from selected stops along the way to highlight key features of the route.

The Nyangumarta Highway is mostly gravel from start to finish, with only short stretches of sand. The first section is wide and well maintained, but the track quickly narrows and becomes rough, overgrown, and much more remote further in. With long distances between points of interest, minimal traffic, and very little infrastructure, this is a genuine remote 4WD track through spinifex country, sand dunes and open Pilbara landscape.

In September last year we spent the day travelling out from Marble Bar along Shay Gap Road, taking in some of the quieter and more remote spots along the way. From Coppins Gap and Muccanoo Rock Art through to Coonieena Creek and Serenity Pool, it turned into one of those drives where the journey itself was just as good as the stops.

Although we couldn’t find a way into Kittys Gap, we pushed on through Shay Gap and along one of the most scenic stretches of outback road we’ve come across. A mix of drone and on-road footage captures the landscape as it unfolded, before linking back up with the Great Northern Highway after a solid day out.

In February we headed out for another weekend through the WA Wheatbelt, chasing quiet camps, winding backroads, and some of the region’s biggest granite outcrops. Starting with a riverside camp along the Murray River, we made our way through Boddington and Quairading, stopping in at the Pink Lake before continuing on to the standout of the trip — Kokerbin Rock.

From there, it was more exploring through places like Bruce’s Rock, Roe Lookout and King Rock, with a mix of open farmland, hidden camps, and the usual challenges of heat and flies along the way. Just under 1,000 km all up, and another reminder of how much there is to see once you start following the quieter roads through the Wheatbelt.

Thanks for watching

Back in January Julie and I headed out for a relaxed weekend through the WA Wheatbelt, covering around 850 km and taking in a mix of quiet camps, granite outcrops, salt lakes, and a few unexpected roadside stops along the way. Starting at Yornaning Dam, we followed the back roads through Malyalling, Yealering, and Sewell Rock, before reaching the standout Gorge Rock and continuing along the Tin Horse Highway.
We finished the trip camping out at The Jam Patch near Lake Grace and exploring the silo art in Pingrup on the way home. A simple trip with plenty to see — and a good reminder of how much there is to discover once you leave the main roads behind.
