A completely different perspective of Boyds Tower from above. From the ground, the tower dominates the landscape, but from the air you can truly appreciate the rugged beauty of this remote stretch of coastline.

The deep blue water, crashing whitewash and striking red rock formations surrounding the headland make this one of the most spectacular locations on the Sapphire Coast. Sitting alone on the edge of Twofold Bay, Boyds Tower almost feels lost in the wilderness despite standing here since 1847.

It’s amazing to think this isolated point once played a major role in Australia’s early maritime and whaling history.

the wild beauty of the Sapphire Coast, the tower was originally intended to become a private lighthouse for entrepreneur Benjamin Boyd.

When approval was refused, the tower instead became part of Boyd’s whaling operations, with lookouts scanning the ocean for migrating whales and signalling crews waiting below. More than 175 years later, the tower still overlooks the same dramatic coastline, where crashing waves, red rock headlands and endless ocean views make this one of the most spectacular locations on the NSW South Coast.

Seeing it from above really shows just how isolated and commanding this historic landmark truly is.

Standing tall above Twofold Bay, Boyds Tower is one of the Sapphire Coast’s most fascinating pieces of history. Built in 1847 by entrepreneur Benjamin Boyd, the tower was originally intended to be a private lighthouse, but government approval was refused before it could ever operate as one.

Instead, it became a whale spotting tower for Boyd’s whaling operations, with lookouts scanning the coastline for migrating whales and signalling crews below. Constructed from costly Sydney sandstone, the tower was a remarkable engineering effort for such a remote location at the time.

Boyd later went bankrupt and abandoned the project, leaving behind the striking structure that still dominates the coastline today. The tower later became associated with the Davidson family whaling operations, adding another chapter to the rich maritime history of Twofold Bay.
