Late yesterday afternoon the bulls arrived all the way from North Qld. As usual premium bulls from Alf and Louise Collins. Having bought them on an online auction you wait in anticipation for them to walk off the truck.

Have you thought of getting out of town and living and working on a cattle station.

Roebuck Plains Station, located just outside Broome in the stunning Kimberley region, is looking for an All-Rounder to join our team.

This is a unique role suited to someone who enjoys working mainly outdoors, takes pride in their surroundings, and is happy to lend a hand wherever needed around a busy cattle station.

The Role
You will primarily be responsible for: Maintaining station gardens, lawns and outdoor areas Irrigation upkeep and general grounds maintenance Help in the cleaning & care of accommodation, surrounds and
communal areas Basic repairs, maintenance and odd jobs Assisting with station and event setup.

No two days are the same — this role suits someone practical, reliable and self-motivated.

About You
We’re looking for someone who: Has an Australian driver’s licence, as will be required to go to
Broome for work on occassion. Enjoys station life. Can work independently and show initiative. Has a positive attitude and team mindset. High level of personal integrity, honesty and professionalism. Takes responsibility for their work, communicates openly and
respectfully, and contributes positively to the team. Understands the importance of maintaining a safe, respectful and
drama-free workplace. Reliable, mature and accountable, with a strong work ethic. Own vehicle looked on favourably, as we are unable to supply a
taxi service in and out of Broome.

Station experience is welcome but not essential.

We took the opportunity to get the females in our crew across to the Rural Ladies Lunch at Fitzroy River Crossing last weekend— and it was one of those days that reminds you why these things matter.

The room was full of women from all across the industry. With the event hosting a panel of woman all sharing their stories, the different roles they’ve stepped into, and the paths they’ve carved out for themselves living remotely. It wasn’t just about jobs — it was about backing yourself, having a go, and seeing what’s possible.

The panel consisted of 4 women involved in the industry.
All with different stories.
3 of the ladies who moved to the Kimberley to work in stockcamp’s. 1 now co-manages a station with her husband and 2 children (Mon’s a bit of a powerhouse and played down her role quit a bit), another was Ainsley who told how she had a fall and ended up breaking her back and then even though she was told she couldn’t do it, got her helicopter licence and is now a helicopter mustering pilot, and another Flic, who even though is quite young is now a Headstockman on a large Kimberley cattle station. Then the 4th lady Bec came up here to nurse in Fitzroy for a couple of months and fell in love with the Kimberley and then found the love of her life, Bec told her story of co-managing a cattle station, while still pursuing her nursing career in remote nursing and has now moved into a senior position within the health department in Broome.

For our RPS girls, it was more than just a day out. It was about connection. Meeting other women who understand the lifestyle, the challenges, and the juggle that comes with it. That kind of support network is something you can’t put a price on.

There’s something pretty powerful about women supporting women out bush — it can be a pretty lonely life, can be hard some days working in hot, harsh environments usually 12 to 14 hr days, working unpredictable animals, repairing & building fencelines and driving machines, amongst a lot of other things that is the job. These events mean woman in the industry get to share knowledge, and lift each other up.

Thanks to the APA & Belinda Duffy for the support of some tickets for some of our staff to go and a big thanks to the organisers Anna Phillips & Isobella Thrupp and the women who stood up and spoke. You never know whose direction you might change just by telling your story.

When Gippsland nurse Anna* looks back on her marriage, she likens herself to a frog in a pot. “The water was boiling, but I was so used to it, I didn’t realise,” she says.

Anna had grown to fear her husband. But that fear had become such a big part of her life, she didn’t know any other way to live. She'd been isolated from her family and friends, she had little access to money and her confidence had plummeted.

Like many women, Anna was a victim of coercive control — a form of domestic abuse that can be especially difficult to escape in rural and regional areas.

A big thank you to Livestock Solutions With Zoetis for sending Everitt over to be part of our station induction week.

Kate ran a really solid session with the crew around vaccines — why we use them, how to use them properly and how to store them correctly. It’s something we do all the time, but don’t always stop and explain the why behind it.

One of the best parts of the day was hearing a few of the more experienced staff that started with us this year, say they’d never actually been taught why we use certain vaccines or what diseases we’re targeting — they’ve just always used what they were told. By the end of it, there was a much better understanding across the board, which is exactly what you want.

Another big takeaway was the cost per head. When you put a dollar value on each shot, it definitely hits home. Hopefully that means a bit more care taken with handling, storage and use going forward… and no more standing there squirting vaccine into the air like we’re on an episode of Grey’s Anatomy 😅

We really appreciate Zoetis doing this for us. It says a lot about how much they value educating young stockmen and supporting the industry properly.

For those who don’t know, Zoetis are a major player in animal health and spend a lot of time on the ground working with producers — and this is a good example of that.

Kate did a fantastic job. Her knowledge and the way she connected with the crew made it an easy, worthwhile session for everyone. Thanks so much for driving across from the NT!

Huge thank you to Andrew Lewis for coming out to Roebuck Plains Station and running a Low Stress Stockhandling course with our stockcamp crew this week.

We make a point of doing this type of training every year, because how we handle cattle matters — not just for the animals, but for our people and our overall operation. Low stress techniques help us move cattle more quietly and efficiently, reduce injury risk (to both staff and livestock), and improve weight gain and overall performance.

It’s also about building good stockmen. Understanding cattle behaviour, pressure, and timing gives our crew more confidence in the yards and in the paddock — whether they’re just starting out or have years under their belt.

We had a great mix of experience levels in the camp, and Andrew did a fantastic job connecting with everyone, keeping it both practical, and enjoyable.

We’re already seeing the benefits in how the crew are working cattle, when they were preg-testing cattle through the yards today and then walking them up to the Roebuck Export Depot on their horses.

Appreciate you making the trip from QLD to the WEST again, Andrew — it’s training like this that keeps lifting the standard of what we do out here.

We were lucky to have Rhys Morrisey from Clear Sky Performance Horses out at Roebuck Plains Station this month, running a horse riding and shoeing clinic with the crew.

From first-timers getting on a horse for the very first time, through to our more experienced riders, everyone got something out of it. The improvement across the board was great to see, and the confidence some of the team gained in just a few days was unreal.

A big thanks to Rhys for the time, knowledge and patience—our crew walked away with skills they’ll carry with them for a long time.

These 2 geldings have been running around without paying rent for the last couple of years, so John decided to pass on some of his knowledge.
In between other management duties he decided to run a breaking in school with these 2 lads.

John used to do 30 - 40 breakers a year, back in the day.

These 2 blokes are well worth the time and effort. 2 geldings now ready to go into the mustering plant for the year.
