What is more powerful than showing your two daughters how strong women are to be able to birth a baby. An experience that will be imprinted on them forever, which they will think back to if they choose to have babies one day. To not fear birth but to be amazed by it.

When you watch someone go through one of the most transformational events of their life you notice all their little details that make that person unique and special. Like the way her nose scrunches up when she really smiles and feels joyous.

The way she notices and appreciates every small loving act that is graced upon her.

That this was not just a momentous moment of meeting her baby but becoming the deeper version of her true self in all it’s beautiful rich complexities and filled with intentional rituals.

Her soul shines so brightly.

One of the tools you might find useful in labour is a rebozo. You don’t have to have a specific piece of material that is an actual rebozo you can use anything like a sheet, or a towel. I often use a slide sheet when working as a midwife at the hospital because it’s what I have available to me.

You can use them in so many different ways including the ones shown here to help with pushing. Wrap them around the hips and pull each way to provide counter pressure on the hips. Wrap it over the woman’s bottom and grasp on each side to shake the hips and bottom between surges to keep everything soft and loose, also helps move babies head into a better position. You can use it as an aid to help you get into a squat. Use under the belly when the woman is on all fours to help “sift the belly” to help move baby into a better position if it is posterior. This gentle lifting of the belly also helps to take the weight off for the mother between surges.

A great resource to look up different ways to use one in labour is which is a wealth of knowledge in optimal fetal positioning techniques.

Did you use a rebozo or a piece of material in labour and how did you use it? Was it helpful?

The moment of exhale. I’ve noticed every mother does this once their baby is in their arms. They close their eyes, and let out a deep exhale. Sometimes it is immediately after the baby is born, sometimes it is a few minutes later.

It’s as if they are returning to the earth, grounding themselves. Being present in this moment and space. It is relief, joy, exhaustion, and elation all in one breath.

Never underestimate the strength and power you hold within you. Watching these two work together to create the birth they had hoped for despite many hurdles put in front of them. The joy and elation afterwards knowing they did it!

The Maiden

She stands at the edge of the universe, waiting for the moment when she will be called behind the veil. As each day passes she becomes more and more open. She feels the intensity growing, as though the vibrations of everything and everyone around her are becoming louder and louder.

She retreats to the calm and quiet of her nest. Let her rest, for once the surges begin to rise she needs all her energy to ride the waves of labour to meet her baby.

The unknown and the certainties of it all unravelling you as a woman to become reborn as mother.

Babies are so magical they can bend time. Before they arrive it feels like they will never come. Days feel as long as weeks. Then suddenly they are earth side and it feels like there was never a time they weren’t here. A week feels like it evaporates as fast as a minute.

Which side are you on right now?

The last few weeks of pregnancy are the hardest for most women. The sitting in the unknown of when this baby will be ready to come and trusting that your body is doing exactly what it needs to. Each day that comes after your “due date” (which is just a estimated guess not a certain date) feels more and more intense. To me it felt like I became more and more open energetically which made all stimulus feel completely overwhelming. That is why we feel the need to limit our interactions with the world and hide away in our own little quiet nest.

I have known this beautiful family for five years now. We met when I was first starting out in photography and I had no clue what I was doing. But for some reason they still loved me and stuck with me as their photographer and friend. We had discussed this baby and birth for many years before she decided to come. I remember the day they called me to say they were pregnant, the pure elation and excitement I felt for them. I took two weeks off my work as a midwife to ensure I did not miss this birth.

But of course the universe had other ideas that no one could have anticipated. At 43 weeks this beautiful baby made her very swift arrival into this world. Sadly it was my first shift back after my holidays at work and so I could not attend.

I am so grateful to Bianca from who provided me with back up support and attended this birth to document it for me. She was amazing and I will forever sing her praises. Community matters so much when you are a birth photographer. We need to support each other and lift each other up because this is a tough gig.

Thank you again Bianca for so beautifully documenting this birth for my friends so that I could still edit it for them.

Third baby, first home birth, the longest she has ever been pregnant. The least intense of all her labour’s. The best experience yet.

I don’t have any beautiful words today. My heart is feeling very heavy with the load that I am carrying for others right now.

If you are waiting on a message or email response from me, please know that I am not ignoring you, I simply do not have the capacity at the moment to give any energy to that part of my work.

But once I have the available time and energy to respond I will get back to you.

After she placed their baby in his arms, tears came flooding into little puddles under her eyes and she said “it’s you holding the baby I made for you”.

You could feel how long she had waited for this moment and finally it was here.
