It was wonderful to welcome such a great community to celebrate local and international artists.

Friday 4 September, Shandy is bringing Metro Arts alive with the kind of sweaty, euphoric chaos that only a proper q***r dancefloor can deliver. Transforming the New Benner Theatre into a playground for DJs, performers, dancers and divas, Shandy disrupts the boundary between audience and cast. Expect a night that’s darker, sweatier and just a little bit risky.

EXHIBITION | ‘Choral Cthonics’

A voice repeats until language thins and disappears. Through chanting, chorals, murmurs and drones, the voice becomes a force that exceeds the body that produces it: a vibration capable of summoning states in which the boundaries of the self begin to loosen.

This exhibition brings together local, national and international artists to explore the voice as instrument, threshold and collective force. Moving across sound, installation, and text, the works consider humming, chanting, spoken language and collective vocalisation as technologies of connection and shifting perception – moments where the individual voice joins with something larger, stranger and less knowable.

THE SCRAMBLE | BOOK NOW

A collision between wrestling and dance.

Two men hit the mat in 'The Scramble', a charged physical duet where exertion, resistance and care collide. They twist, tussle, grapple and brace — toe to toe in a work of dance-meets-wrestling that bristles with male intimacy, contest, and connection.

Created by Shaun Johnston in collaboration with performers Luther Wilson and Nathan Turtur, The Scramble is a compelling meditation on male vulnerability, intimacy and bravado — a celebration of the often silent and unseen ways men seek closeness through contact.

EXHIBITION | (In)Sight by Kuweni Dias Mendis & Grant x Wilkes

Step into a shadowy environment where light reveals, reflects, and deceives. In this immersive installation, Kuweni Dias Mendis and Grant x Wilkes create a sensory experience that draws on the mechanics of optics, testing what it means to see and be seen.

This exhibition builds on their award-winning collaborative work, recognised with the Metro Arts Experimental Portraiture Prize at the 2025 Brisbane Portrait Prize, and expands their collaboration into a full-scale exhibition.

WINNERS ANNOUNCED | 'the churchie' 2026

Congratulations to the prize recipients of the the churchie emerging art prize 2026.

Selected from 17 finalists exhibiting here at Metro Arts, Huiyi Xiao has been awarded the $40,000 Major Prize for their work 'The Fire That Wouldn't Call Itself Ash'.

This year's Special Commendation Prize has been awarded to Rosemary Tamas-Cao for 'Squat Tossed', with Commendation Prizes presented to Georgia Lucy for 'Gough and Margaret's Bullclip' and Juanita McLauchlan for 'Crossing Time'.

Jason Smith, Director of the Art Gallery of South Australia (.agsa), was this year's judge and selected the prize recipients.

The finalists' exhibition is currently on view across the Metro Arts galleries and theatre until 8 August 2026.

A peek at what's to come from the finalists of the 2026 churchie emerging art prize, opening at Metro Arts on 24 July.

Spanning installation, sculpture, video and painting, this year's finalists present a broad range of materials and mediums. From large scale installations incorporating spandex and engine oil to multimedia video works and sculptures made from Vietnamese rice paper, the breadth of this years exhibition is best experienced in person.

Pictured are works by finalists Alannah Dair, Rosemary Tamas-Cao, Huiyi Xiao and Ena Grozdanic.

Finalists Judge | the churchie emerging art prize 2026.

Jason Smith, Director of the Art Gallery of South Australia is the judge of 'the churchie' finalists exhibition, selecting the recipents of the Major Prize and Commendation Awards.

With more than 30 years of experience across Australia's major public art galleries, Jason has held curatorial roles at the National Gallery of Victoria and Queensland Art Gallery | Gallery of Modern Art, and was formerly Director and CEO of Geelong Gallery, one of Australia's oldest and most significant regional galleries.

“‘the churchie’ is an exhibition and prize that provides an exceptional opportunity to survey the sheer breadth of conceptual and material practices being developed by emerging artists. I am delighted to have been invited to act as judge in the 2026 Prize and I am looking forward to being taken into unexplored territories by an inspiring – and inspired – group of emerging artists.”
