He attained his Bachelor of Creative Industries, with a major in Entertainment Industries and a minor in Visual Art, at QUT Kelvin Grove in 2013. Joel has been invited to showcase artwork at a number of events and venues around Brisbane, including paintings, paper sculpture, installations and photography. Joel's first interstate exhibition, Company of Men 2015, was held at BrightSpace in Melbourne
, Victoria. Joel is co-producer of Vanguard Burlesque alongside Lillian lace, Brisbane’s premier burlesque variety event which has seen success in Brisbane since 2014. Joel has photographed a number of personalities and celebrities, including; Paris Hilton, Mel B, Rhonda Burchmore, Olympian Matthew Mitcham, Zack Smith, Ryan Greasley, Brendan Maclean, DJ Havana Brown, The Veronicas, The Naked Magicians, Josh Wade, stars from RuPaul's Drag Race, Duo-RAW, and every crowned Miss Burlesque Australia. In early 2015, Joel his first solo exhibition and book, HYDRA, at the Brisbane Powerhouse. Inspired by a dark alternative vision of isolated masculinity, HYDRA was on display from the 3rd to the 22nd of February 2015 as part of the first MELT Q***r Arts Festival. Joel's photograph, 'Joseph Simons as King Louis XIV as The Sun King', was a finalist in the inaugural Melt Portrait Prize in 2015. 2016 saw him taking on the roll of creative designer for the third iteration of the gender-bent cabaret Boy&Girl at Brisbane Powerhouse, produce another festival season of Vanguard Burlesque. His extended series ‘ *RN' launched as a book and exhibition as part of the third annual MELT Q***r Arts festival at Brisbane Powerhouse in January 2017.
