Our Xplorer Adventures

Our Xplorer Adventures This page is intended to document our travels in our Hardkorr Xplorer camper trailer.

John & Sue purchased this in early 2023 & this site will be a location to share some of our photographs from our adventures as we tour this great country.

It’s been quite some time since we have been able to get away in the Xplorer due to other commitments. But we decided to spend a few days in Lamington National Park at the O’Reilly’s campground. We have been here a few times over the years but this is the first time not being in the hostel. A beautiful location though it does seem to be a bit of a wind tunnel where we are situated.
Lots of bird life everywhere & plenty of rainforest walks

Good freecamp at Gil Weir about 6 km south of Miles. Plenty of space though a little shady if you’re wanting solar. This morning was the coldest that we’ve had this trip at -0.9 degrees. But with the sun shining the temperature is rising nicely now.
This will be our last post for this 6 weeks away. Tonight we will be with family in Toowoomba before driving back to home in Brisbane tomorrow. By then we will have traveled just over 8000 kilometres. Certainly our biggest trip to date and we didn’t even leave Queensland!!!!!
Then the real work begins cleaning up both car and XPlorer camper. Both are absolutely filthy with a combination of red dust throughout together with thickly applied mud and a gravel collection in other places. 😬😬 It’s certainly been a lot of fun though.

We are now only a few days away from the end of this trip. It’s been wonderful, not only to get up to the tip, but also so many other interesting places. Spending a couple of nights at this lovely freecamp by the Maranoa River at Fisherman’s Rest just outside of Mitchell. Very relaxing. We were even tipped off by some other campers that there is free firewood to be found at the local sawmill where they leave offcuts out to collect. Winning 🥇 😁

Well that was a fun night. We’ve been in Tambo and made sure that we got to Ben’s Chicken Racing at the Royal Carrangarra Hotel. Thoroughly entertaining and we enjoyed a meal in the pub afterwards. It’s been pretty cool in Tambo at only 1 degree yesterday morning but warmed up to a beautiful 25 by midday. Had to throw in some extra bedding for the Xplorer Rooftop Tent but we did stay warm enough

It’s been a few days since the last post as we have had no service for most of that time.
We had a booked site at Porcupine Gorge for 2 nights that we couldn’t get to the other day due to the road closure, but we decided to at least try to get there via Charters Towers for the 2nd night. Roughly a 500km detour from our original plan!!!! We also tried to book another night but unfortunately nothing available so a single night it was. At least we were able to have a look around at the gorge and it didn’t disappoint. Absolutely stunning as you will see from the photos.
We then travelled south as we have decided to go to Tambo. We camped last night at Four Mile Waterhole in the Forest Den National Park. Pretty cool overnight but a beautiful spot by the waterhole.

After it being so wet while we were in Cobbold Gorge, at dawn the next day there was almost not a cloud in the sky. We had planned to travel to Porcupine Gorge, including driving along the Gregory Development Road from Einasleigh to the Lynd Junction before heading down the Kennedy Development Road to Porcupine Gorge. We can honestly say that the 75 kms on the Gregory Development Road was the most corrugated road either of us has experienced on our travels. Certainly much worse than anything we experienced on the Cape. Even airing down made little difference. On top of that there was quite a lot of water around and plenty of muddy patches. It took several hours to cover that distance.
We had checked for road closures etc before we left Cobbold but even so found out when we got to The Oasis Roadhouse that the road from there to Porcupine is closed due to flooding from the unseasonable deluge yesterday. Apparently 2 Semi trailers have been bogged down there.
So last minute change of plans. We have driven back towards Charters Towers and stopped for the night at Bluewater Springs Roadhouse for the night. Will decide what our next destination is tomorrow but unfortunately we won’t be able to make our 2 nights booking at Porcupine Gorge but maybe can make it for the 2nd night only.

Cobbold Gorge was wet, wet, wet today. Hadn’t rained here since April and is not normal for this time of year. The 7am Gorge tour we had booked still went ahead and saw us getting out of bed in the dark with pouring rain.
But for every downside there is also an upside. We had a unique experience by seeing waterfalls coming over the gorge, something rarely seen during the dry season. In fact this was the first time that our guide had seen it this way. Last happened many years ago. It was challenging to keep the camera dry but I think it has provided some special images.
We enjoyed the glass bridge to walk over the top of the gorge, which gave a unique perspective, as well as the boat ride upstream. Got back cold and completely saturated but so grateful we still got to do the tour.

Had a great time at Undara Lava Tubes a couple of days ago. Awesome natural structures formed in such a volcanic region a long time ago. We visited The Archway, Stevenson’s & Collins Rd Cave during the guided tour. In the afternoon we took self guided walk around the Kalkani volcano rim. Whilst there we also caught a look at this echidna.

Loved our couple of days at Chillagoe. The landscape is very unique with striking rocky outcrops a major feature. Under these are almost 700 registered caves in the area. Visited a couple of sites on our own and did guided walks through Donna, Tregzinn & Royal Arch Caves. Each one different from the others. Final Royal Arch Cave is a 2.8 km walk where there are both huge chambers and plenty of places where you need to duck to get past low points.
Also saw quite a lot of birdlife including red-winged parrots & black cockatoos.
Of course a trip to Chillagoe is incomplete without seeing the old smelter, which in its day employed over 1000 workers. Tom Prior’s BP & Ford Motor Museum has some rare and valuable vehicles from the past century or so.
For a very small town there is certainly plenty to see.
