As part of the I'm doing for we had to explain our creative process for our major assignment a portfolio of work for end of term showcase.
I had many ideas when I was starting the exhibition assignment and I think I picked the hardest one to do, I wanted to challenge myself by using the studio and lights. So, I choose to celebrate the male body by showing it n**e, warts and all. I wanted a cross range of age and sizes. But the hardest thing has been organising the models. First, I have to find models that are willing to go n**e and are willing to do it for free. Finding places to advertise is trying as well, when one place dries up I have to then find another place to advertise and so forth. Then, they have to be free Monday – Wednesday through the hours of 9.30am – 3.30pm. If they are then its organising studio time for when they are available, and the inevitable cancelations, and go through it all over again.
I am still learning with the studio work, what back drop to use, how to set up the lights what props to use. Trying to think of different poses and not have them look pornographic but tasteful and each model different, sometimes not knowing what the models body shape will be and how well they can move. Thank goodness for google, many hours have been spent going through image after image to try and find some poses that are masculine while trying not to show genitalia.
After each shoot I go through the photos and see where I could have done better, with lighting, camera angle, model placement, which poses worked and which didn’t, framing the shot and a lot of other techniques as well.
After taking all this into account it’s back to the drawing board and how to set up for the next shoot, if there is time I might play with the lights and how they are set up to see if I can get different effects or how the shadows might fall or the light might highlight a different part of there body. Also, it’s back to google to find some more poses that might good for the next model. If one pose doesn’t work for one model I might retry it with another model they might have a better body shape for it. Sometimes in the shoot I might get an idea and go for that. I try to leave time that after I have taken the shots that I want if the model wants to try some poses that he had thought of or wants to try he can.
In the end I want a product that will show the male form in different ways, showing different ages, sizes and ethnicity and that no matter what size we are we should all love our body as is.
Unfortunatley I can't show any pictures of the models here without their permission. so, you will have to come to the exhibition if you want to see the finnished project.
