Jane McMenamin Photography Australian-based bird and nature photographer. https://www.janemcmenamin.com/ All prints are made on archival cotton rag art paper and are for sale.

I am a bird photographer on a mission to photograph commonly-found birds in ways that gives the viewer an insight into their personalities and their lives. I also love to experiment with my camera, using intentional camera movement and slow shutter speed to create artistic effects.

So nice to visit my old haunts after a long break. The old familiar faces greeted me, notably this pelican, reliably manning his post. It was so worth the 4am wake-up, a quick early morning cup of tea and the 40 minute drive to arrive just after sunrise.

So excited to have made the Final 8 with this image in the Portrait category of BirdLife Australia's 2025 Photography Awards! 🥳

The story of this image, in keeping with my love of common birds, is as follows: "A Dusky Moorhen looks up for a moment, considering my presence. It continued munching - going vegetarian today - whilst watching me. It's face shield was striking, and I thought how often these common birds are taken for granted, these details overlooked. I was pleased to capture it front-on, the redness of the beak with its yellow tip, and the eyes that were staring at me."

It's nesting time on Lord Howe Island! Brown Noddies fly tirelessly back and forth, collecting seaweed from the incoming tide to build up their nests. Such a magic place - I didn't want to leave ❤️

The Sulphur-crested Cockatoo - cheeky, funny, intelligent and endlessly fascinating! Can you tell I love them? 😂 Just over our back fence, I lay next to this one, its beak buried in clover flowers. It didn't mind a bit that a weird contraption was pointed its way - no Model Release Form needed here!

These little Red-browed finches fly around in flocks and could be mistaken, from a distance, as a swarm of butterflies. They are so busy! This one, in a patch of sunlight, is chomping on grass seeds although you may have to zoom in to see! 😂

It's heart-warming when someone sees in an image what I intended and felt when I created it. This image, 'Egret's Last Light', has now sold for the second time but my first on Bluethumb as part of a limited series of 10.

The Great Egret is a favourite of mine for its focus, stillness and patience. It has become my mentor in mindfulness!

Thanks and collector! The link to my Bluethumb profile is in my Bio.
