Penida east coast with Mónica and Nico - French Kiss Divers Lembongan.
I am split between the desire to share the wonderful underwater world with others and the fear to see it spoiled by mass tourism. Scuba diving is dangerous. Wild animals down there. Better just enjoy the videos and stay on the couch. 🙂

🌊 Lionfish: Friend or Foe? 🐟🔥

They look like underwater royalty… but don’t be fooled.

Lionfish are one of the ocean’s most beautiful predators—and also one of the most destructive invaders.

❌ In places like the Caribbean & Mediterranean, they have:
• No natural predators
• Explosive reproduction (up to 2 million eggs/year)
• A massive appetite that can wipe out up to 79% of native reef fish

The result?
👉 Coral reefs struggle
👉 Biodiversity drops
👉 Entire ecosystems shift

But here’s the twist…

✅ They’re native heroes in the Indo-Pacific (yes, including Indonesia!)
👉 Balanced ecosystems
👉 Natural predators keep them in check

🔥 New trend: turning the problem into a solution
Divers, chefs, and conservationists are now saying:
👉 “If you can’t beat them… eat them.”

Lionfish are becoming a sustainable seafood choice helping protect reefs.

So… friend or foe?
👉 Depends where you meet them.

💭 Next time you dive, remember:
Beauty in the ocean doesn’t always mean balance.

Is the batfish the dandy of the Reef?
the reef batfish (Ephippidae) are elegant, social tropical fish commonly seen around Bali reefs.

Species like the Orbicular batfish and Teira batfish are the most common.

Juveniles mimic toxic flatworms or leaves for protection, while adults become large, silver, disk-shaped fish with black bands.

They are slow-moving, curious, and often swim in schools, sometimes approaching divers.

Omnivorous, they eat algae, plankton, and small invertebrates, and may act as cleaner fish.

Frequently spotted in places like Nusa Penida and Nusa Lembongan.

We went retour Manta point, no whales, no mantas. Whales we did not expect. But the absence of mantas was disappointing. May be they got sick of the snorkellers harassing them and they moved elsewhere? So we went to Manta Bay. The largest oceanic mantas and their babies were there. Unfortunately the snorkellers chasing them as well. A bit of marine education would be welcome. Dont chase them and they will come to you. It is that simple.
Thank you to Maria Jones for her footage of me. Thank you to my dive Guru and friend Regis Crespo and thanks to French Kiss Divers Lembongan. Pros as always
