Blood Moon 2026

Azure Kingfisher (Ceyx azureus)

On the edge of the rainforest, we found a couple of these stunning kingfishers feeding and tending a nest on a quiet stretch of creek.

These kingfisher are only 17–19 cm (6.7–7.5 in) in length, and the male weighs 29–32 g (1.0–1.1 oz) while the female is slightly heavier at 31–35 g (1.1–1.2 oz). Pretty small when trying to photograph from a distance!

Noisy Pitta (Pitta versicolor)

Had a great time yesterday getting back out there with the camera and spending the day with a good mate photographing some birds.

Finished the day shooting this stunner of a pitta in the rainforest just before we lost all light. A nice way to kick off the year!

Hours away from the next lunar eclipse! Will it be as spectacular?

12 months have passed since we witnessed one of the greatest lunar eclipses in South East Queensland!

Ebony Leaf Monkey (Trachypithecus auratus)

Also known as the Javan Lutung or Budeng, this species of monkey is far less common than the long-tailed macaques and one I was hoping to see while looking for birds in the West Bali National Park.

Peregrine Falcon (Falco peregrinus)

The fastest animal on the planet!

An unforgettable moment as this falcon dropped down off a building roof to take chase after a pigeon. Having already been photographing this bird for some time prior to this shot, my camera settings were already dialled in for some quick bursts. A stroke of luck as the pigeon flew behind me putting the falcon on a flight path heading my way. This allowed me to keep it in frame for a couple of seconds and snag this shot. These birds can really move!
