Experienced my first exhibition the other night and walked away with both a Silver Print Award and Second Place Overall in the exhibition.

Below is my Artist Statement:

“It's always red, the static in my head” - Garrett Russell

What is the work about?

My work ‘Dark Rooted Emotion’ explores the feelings of how mental health can have its hold on you, taking influences from music and personal experiences. I show these feelings through visuals of drowning, sleep paralysis and a haunting ghost.

What have you tried to communicate in your images?

I have tried to communicate the feelings and thoughts of mental health through my works. I wanted to express how people who have anxiety and/ or depression can feel and how their thoughts can slowly harm their life. As though a window into the inner workings of their mind and how they see things with a dark cloud over them.

What is it about this type of photography that interests you?

I wanted to photograph the things that would normally be considered uncomfortable or make the viewer feel uneasy when looking at them but also drawn to look at the images. I like to photograph dark and haunting visuals that look captivating and also resonate with the people who view them.
