Hey Folks, So myself and fellow tog Davina Davina Gitanjali Nyasha Jogi have been working on something a bit different...

The Defenders’ is a mid-project exhibition by photographers Victoria Baker and Davina Jogi, which juxtaposes formal portraits of local members of the Volunteer Bush Fire Brigades with elements of the natural environment. Imagined as a response to the cataclysmic 2019 Australian bushfire season, the intention of the work is to highlight the unseen, ordinary people whose livelihoods, family life, and history are intertwined with the Australian bush and simultaneously to raise questions about our own responsibility towards the environment. The project is supported through a Resilience Grant from Regional Arts WA which funded a 3-month mentorship with award-winning, Australian, photographic artist Aletheia Casey to assist in developing the work.

We are having an opening night next Saturday the 19th at 5:30pm All welcome. Nibbles & mulled wine provided.
The exhibition will then run for the following two weeks.x

Pete and Lyn Whitney, members of the Wandillup Brigade. Lyn grew up in Bridgetown, on the farm next door to the one they own now. She says she doesn’t remember worrying about fires when she was a child, and they still don’t live in constant fear of them even though they both agree the land is a lot dryer than it used to be. They certainly take precautions, but have agreed not to live in fear and have seen how effective the volunteer bushfire brigades are, and how well the community looks after the each other. This project is supported through the State Government’s Royalties for Regions Program as part of the Regional Arts and Cultural Investment Program, and Regional Arts WA.

Millie is in charge at Bridgetown’s Incident Control Centre when a fire is reported organising runners to the fire, welfare crews, shift changes, attending the radio and tracking the fire and weather patterns as the fire progresses. She moved to Bridgetown in the 90s and considered joining the ambos before signing up to the Fireys but decided it would

So I’m officially reigniting this insta account as myself and finally get underway with our collab ‘The Defenders’ which focuses on the climate change, those who deal with the reality of the threat of bushfires and the volunteer fire brigade. We began last year, but it came to an abrupt halt due to covid. The silver lining is that we’ve received resilience grant which is providing some funding for a 3 month Mentorship with London based photographer Who will help us push the project conceptually. This project is supported through the State Government’s Royalties for Regions Program as part of the Regional Arts and Cultural Investment Program, and Regional Arts WA. Here is Wombat! A salt of the earth type who has been clocking mother nature’s activities on his veggie run through the South West & Great Southern for many years. As bushfires currently rage north of Perth, there has never been a more appropriate time for a project with this topic.
