The “poor cousin” has just turned into something special.

Sitting alongside the 36 hole Peninsula Kingswood Country Golf Club, the Long Island course which is part of 72 hole club felt like so much more could be done with it.

The land was good and the hole routing worked but it just lacked a bit of polish (and a fresh set of eyes).

So I was very excited to hear some time ago that the very talented team had been given the brief to “reimagine” the Long Island course.

And reimagine they have with a course that now features 3 different routings - The original 1938 layout, The Track and The Farm. Each provide subtle variations to the original course with a different routing seeing the golfer play to similar greens from different angles. It is the ultimate “I could imagine this as a hole” layout.

Some images for you to get excited about the place. The glorious sunsets in Melbourne in early Winter provide a richness in color that I just love.

Let me know what you think. Are you a member here? Happy with the changes? I look forward to playing it when I don’t have my camera in hand.

Light changes quickly…and images look completely different.

I have been spending some time at the gem that is capturing some updated images of both courses and I have been amazed at how the light changes over the course of less than one hour.

This private member’s course boasts two world class courses - North and South masterfully redesigned by and each offering a different golf experience (and challenge).

Some images of the South course for you today, showing a diverse range of colors. The first shot today is of the par 5, 15th. The fairways do not have any direct sun, however, the tops of the trees are still illuminated with an early Winter glow providing a very cool photo (in my view). Swipe left to see some other images and let me know what you think.

Glenn and his team do an amazing job of keeping both courses in pristine condition all year round. The fact that we are in Winter and the place looks as good as it does is a testament to them.

Loving the Melbourne Sandbelt? Well, stay tuned for some exciting news re my next publication coming out in August….we might just be continuing the “Great Golf” theme (if you get my drift).

A very special hole on one of my favourite courses in the world.

If you have ever experienced crossing 17 mile drive in Pebble Beach, CA from the 14th hole at Cypress Point to the 15th then I am sure you will agree with me it is one of the most special walks in golf.

There is a real sense of anticipation as you walk through the little wooden gate that says ominously “No trespassing” and along the sandy path for about 40 metres before you arrive on the 15th tee.

And there it is - one of the most beautifully natural par 3 holes in golf.

A 9 iron or pitching wedge is the normal club and trust me, you just want to hit the green, which I have managed to do a few times in the past.

Depending on the wind, the drama of the hole is highlighted with a full carry over the frothy sea and sometimes even a sea lion or two basking on the rocks.

One or two putts later and you walk off feeling extremely satisfied before making the next special walk - to the 16th tee.

All in all an amazing golf experience.

Played Cypress Point? Let me know your experience in the comments.

Have a great day.

In the new age of golf it seems that destination golf is gaining momentum in a big way.

Good golf does not have to be located in suburbia although there is plenty of amazing golf in close proximity to major cities.

However there is something exciting about visiting a golf course that takes effort to get to. Over the years I have been to a few places that require a lot of planning and a lot of time to get to.

Ardfin is a golf course you may not have heard of - a challenging Bob Harrison design that is located on the very remote island of Jura, Scotland.

How do you get here you might ask? Well here goes - 2.5 hour drive from Glasgow to Kennacraig Ferry Terminal, 2 hour ferry ride to Port Askaig, 10 minute small ferry across to Feolin and then a 15 min drive to Ardfin Estate.

It was worth every minute of it.

Over a 4 day period we had everything - sun, rain, sleet, wind and hail. Tough, you might say but the 5.5 star accommodation and Michelin star dining sort of made up for it….

Through all of this I managed to capture some fantastic photos for the owner of this very unique golf course.

I have been told a round of golf at Ardfin can take a while - what with stopping in the greenhouse after hole 7 for drinks, having lunch in the boathouse at the back of the 11th and then finishing off at 18 approx 5 leisurely hours later.

Been here or dying to get here? Let me know in the comments.

What an amazing sunrise.

In Melbourne at this time of the year the weather patterns provide great opportunities to catch dramatic images.

Today’s sunrise over on the was crazy, to say the least. It started with a light red hue that got more intense over the next 10 minutes, allowing me to capture a surreal image overlooking the 9th, 7th and 18th holes of the West Course and the clubhouse and 18th of the East.

Then as quickly as it appeared, it was gone, giving rise to a morning that was a bit cloudy.

Grabbing opportunities is one of the keys to capturing great photos and the 10 minutes I had today made it all worthwhile.

It was a great start to the weekend. Hope you enjoy yours.

I grew up playing golf here - but it was nothing like it is today!

My first experience was as a member of for a number of years back in the 90’s. I loved the place and would get down there whenever I could.

Having said that, I did always think it could be so much more. The land was great and the North and South courses satisfied the members.

However, it took great vision from the golf club board at the time to engage the services of to completely change the look and feel of the courses and realise the full potential that many members knew was there.

The end result is two courses, both rated in the top 15 in the country (North at 5, South at 15). I have played the courses a few times and been greatly impressed with the work here. I have also photographed for the club and last night headed back again to capture new images for a project I am working on (stay tuned).

It continues to impress and as you will see from the images, both courses just pop. Kudos to Glenn Stuart and his team for always presenting the courses in immaculate condition - making my job a whole lot easier. It is the middle of May and in Melbourne terms the courses generally lose color and firmness but PK is looking fantastic.

If you get the chance to play PK then go for it. Staying in house is also a nice addition to a golf trip.

Oh and it was a pretty nice sunset as you can see from the last image.

Have a great day.

Another gem of a course that you may not have heard of.

Just down the road From the wonderful Rye Golf Club in the south of England lies another course that sits relatively unknown to all but locals and golf aficionados.

is a classic out and back links course lid out over relatively flat land yet often a great deal of variety with the hole routing and green structures.

The esteemed golf course architect Dr. Alistair Mackenzie had influence here on a number of holes but particularly the 6th and 17th holes - both par 3’s. Subtle contouring on green looks perfect natural and the flat land makes the course an easy walk.

A distinctive water tower sits alongside the 18th hole and is a great framing reference for photos.

Swipe left to see a number of photos I captured when I was here and let me know your thoughts about Littlestone.

The course was in great condition and well worth playing if you can get a game.

I lost 89 followers on IG yesterday…

Ordinarily, this would be a concerning situation, as I tend to gain new followers on a regular daily basis (thank you).

However, reading the news, it is all part of Instagram’s regular cleanup of fake or bogus accounts.

Suits me just fine. I want people who follow me to be engaged with what I post.

Engagement certainly happened when I last posted about the wonderfully understated Harry C**t gem in the South of England.

I absolutely loved the course - both to photograph and play when we were here last August.

The course is a par 68 yet can pack a punch when the prevailing winds kick in. The main topographical feature of the course is a tall sand ridge that runs the full extent of the property. Holes have been laid out on both sides of the ridge and a couple of them traverse this landform..

Standing atop the ridge affords you views of most of the course and it is a great place to stand (or sit) and watch the world go by. One of my photos today is a perfectly positioned bench sitting alongside the 5th tee.

If you get the chance to visit and play Rye go for it. The lunch is a must do and rivals the best in the game…

Sanctuary Cove has never looked better…

A return to the Gold Coast where the weather has been challenging over the past few weeks had me a little bit uncertain about how the Palms course would photograph.

However, it was as if it had not rained at all! Congratulations to Cam Smith and his hardworking team for prepping the course in the usual immaculate condition, allowing me to capture some very nice photos.

Wearing my other hat (corporate golf event management) saw myself and the team (thanks Janet and Chloe) up here running the HINO Australia Tenkaichi Trophy National Final. It was a great event played over the Pines course, with countless comments from participants about how good the course was.

The new work on the Palms course, beautifully crafted (pardon the pun) by is really looking good and I thought you might like to see a few images I captured.

Stay tuned as I head back in a few weeks for the finalisation of the shoot.

It just fits….

In this day and age when golf course are often “manufactured” it is so refreshing to look back on some of the “Golden Age Design” courses and see that sometimes less is more.

Making a golf course fit into the land it is on rather than attempting to create something is one of the hallmarks, I feel, of a world class design.

I just can’t get enough of Royal Melbourne Golf Club on the famous - my backyard and a course I have been privileged to have photographed for over 25 years.

It just keeps getting better and a visit this week helped to reinforce the absolute beauty, strategy, challenge and fairness of the course - with the West Course just rated Number 1 in Australia and the East number 9. Combined the Composite course used for tournaments is even better!

Enjoy today’s images, starting with 5 West, 16 East, Clubhouse and city skyline with the course and finally 2 West.

Special place in world golf. Enjoy the images.
