Last night I had the chance to spend a good half hour photographing one of the tiny frogmouths that lives around my place. I’ve been seeing them almost daily for the past four years, and I never get tired of their quiet presence.

It was a real treat to do something a little different — shooting well after sunset, when the frogmouth came and settled on my deck. The soft glow in the background is actually the Gold Coast lights shining through the night, creating that beautiful bokeh effect.

Last October a fire started on the hill opposite to where I live in Tamborine mountain. Luckily it was well contained by SES and what you are seeing in this photo is actually the back burn to contain the actual fire.

Adding the recent fires in Victoria it is a reminder of how it can quickly unfolded and of the importance of being vigilant.

I’ve had this waterfall on my list for a long time. After a bit of rain, and I finally decided to go and check it out. The morning started off nicely overcast — the kind of light you hope for when heading to a fall.

A bit of rock hopping later, we arrived to find the flow looking good, but with very little glow in the water. Then, inevitably, the sun broke through and I thought the window was probably gone.

Instead, the light started interacting with the spray, throwing a clean ray through the scene and adding just enough specular highlights to the foreground to make it work. One of those moments where you just wait, watch, and let the scene settle.

Some careful polarisation on the falls and a slightly slower shutter speed in the foreground helped balance motion and texture. Nothing fancy — just small adjustments at the right time.

Ended up with an image I’m genuinely happy with.

Wishing everyone a great start to 2026 — Happy New Year.
