Eastern Greys of the East
Eastern grey kangaroos (Macropus giganteus), also known in Tasmania as forester kangaroos, reside in the Darlington area on Maria Island. These imposing creatures are Tasmania's largest marsupial and can reach heights of 2m and a weight of around 60 kg. Moving by hopping, they gather in groups of 3-4, but can occasionally be found in mobs of 10 or more.
Now a protected wildlife species in Tasmania, Eastern grey kangaroos were introduced to Maria Island in the early 1970s for the purpose of conservation and managing the island's vegetation through grazing. While 45 kangaroos were originally introduced, the current population is estimated to be around 1000.
