Jasmine is a professional family and wedding photographer based in Perth, Western Australia. My mission is to photograph women as art, and create work that makes people stop and feel ❤️

I have been obsessed with portrait photography for the last 16 years and it’s been an honour to document and connect with hundreds and hundreds of beautiful humans in that time.

I was initially fascinated with newborns, maternity, families and weddings…and it still blows me away when I see my clients now 14 years later with a whole family and so many milestones I’ve been honoured to witness. It’s never lost on me how big it is for someone to ASK to have their photograph taken (sometimes under duress but still they were willing😅😂) in their biggest moments- and me a complete stranger gets this front and centre view into their world (and get to document their favourite people in the whole world). I know in years to come these photographs will be their most cherished things they actually own.

And then came the random niche of underwater portraits. A real wtf this doesn’t even make any sense?! But I kept going because it literally made me feel ALIVE- the water is truely where I believe my gift lies.

This last week I’ve been asked numerous times - what is my biggest dream if I knew I couldn’t fail? What is my mission? What am I here to do? Oooh just a few small questions 😅💁🏻‍♀️

I know I’m here to create beautiful art that makes people feel…

Tips I want all my clients to know before their underwater shoot 👀

What you wear will change the feeling of your images so how do you want to see yourself?!

Wear that (or don’t wear that if you know what I mean 👀)

If I see another hibiscus flower at an underwater shoot I’ll actually vomit 😅😂 I joke but actually it’s the truth - if you love flowers use them! I love love love flowers and plants in underwater shoots but I’ll never suggest someone uses them if they aren’t excited by them personally. I want this shoot to feel like YOU, not what you saw on the feed lately👀

Yeah getting out if your head is easier said then done I totally appreciate that- BUT if you fully trust the process and be present I promise you it shows!

This is a fine line -you want eat so you don’t get out starving and feeling faint but also not so full that you feel sick while swimming. An hour before shoot seems to work best for me.

You burn a lot of energy in the water so snacks for the way home is also recommended!

I know you are probably so far down the list of things to do in any given day -but on shoot day can I please strongly advise you allow a little extra space for the getting ready slowly and allow time to drive and arrive RELAXED. It’s normal to feel nervous before a photoshoot, but I promise I got you and this gets to be FUN! ❤️ Jaz

Honoured to have been asked to be a Judge for Australian Photographic Prize this year!

I judged the “underwater” category last Saturday (which on a side note I really hope one day includes people too- we will only see this if lots of underwater portrait photographers enter- so people you know what to do next year- yes?!) and tomorrow I’ll be judging in “creative portrait” 11am-130pm AEST.

Entering and listening to photography awards judging the last 14 years has been fundamental to my own learning as a photographer - I know how hard it is to hear critical feedback on work you think is your best yet - but that is how you push the bar higher again for next year! If you entered the cliche is you’ve already won (but it’s true), and if you didn’t you can still learn so much from listening to the judges comments on EVERY image that is in the top 30. The judging is played live on YouTube, for all categories, probably the best free resource to any photographer who wants to better their work (or understand what makes an award winning image).

Photography judging is a wild concept as it’s so subjective - but across 5 judges it generally works extremely well. You might not always agree, or see something someone else does but that’s the game (some of my favourite ever images have never won awards!).

I love the challenge of judging for awards-it pushes me so far outside of my own comfort zone (public speaking under pressure 😅💁🏻‍♀️) but I know it makes me grow as a photographer right alongside all the entrants. Anything critical is said with love, to grow the photography community to be their absolute best 👏🙌

What does a custom underwater portrait experience even mean?! 👀

It means you get my unique creative eye in combination with YOUR dreams, ideas, input. A true collaboration, where you see in real time how both ideas unfold.

Some people love light, bright, closeups and come with strong ideas. And some people (like Rachael) the brief was more open but loved dark contrast, lots of anonymous vibes with focus on the body shape and go wild with creativity 👏👏👏

If you have no idea what you want -don’t stress I work that out with you on the phone before your shoot! I don’t really need any input to create beautiful images with you, but I know deep down you probably saw something in an image that spoke to you-and if I can give you your dream image to admire every single day for the wall, you bet I’m going to do it!

Life is too short to not see yourself as ART ✨

Oh how I wish underwater maternity photoshoots were a well known thing when I was pregnant! You simply don’t get to go back in time for a redo!

Photography can seem expensive until all you have are the average shots on your iPhone…can I strongly urge you to not look back with regret if an underwater maternity shoot is your dream shoot 👀💁🏻‍♀️

How did I create this underwater self portrait for the .facades.exhibition ?!

I got so many questions last night about how I actually made this image unassisted! I love that not many people could comprehend it at all!

In honesty I shot for 15-20 minutes in the pool, and then another 15minutes in my outdoor shower (in case I got nothing in the pool because I knew 15minutes was not very long to nail anything!).

I weighted my canon camera in my housing to a metal stool using my weight belt I usually wear for shoots. I set my camera to interval timer before closing housing so it would take one image every second! YES, I have a lot of average images from this shoot 😅😂💁🏻‍♀️

I set up the position of camera with a quick check using my mask before taking off so didn’t have mask in shots. Then proceeded to try different things obviously coming up for air between which was off camera as clearly this was very professionally filmed and thought out 😅😂 Aka deadline was looming and all I knew was that I wanted to wear the gifted skirt from that had made ✨🙌

Yes, it’s natural light!

My pool was so so dirty compared to usual and I didn’t feel like spending 10+ hours editing leaves and dirt out so I started thinking of ways to layer a texture over the top- the random water rushing across port lens throw away shot I took while washing my housing was now at the forefront of my mind 😂💁🏻‍♀️

I took both images into and did a very rough double exposure blend to see if it was just crazy chaos or something worthwhile. I did a test print and relieved that it somehow worked 🥳

The more I looked at the second the layer the more I saw the metaphor for the overwhelm felt at times.

Thanks again for inviting me to be apart of this exhibition with 50 incredible Perth creatives. Being a photographer is my favourite thing in world, but like any job it has a side that doesn’t get spoken about much! Thank you for creating the platform for more conversations on mental health 👏🙌
