Wild Horses the Mustangs of Modoc County California.
The journey continues.
Having visited the Devils Garden, twice to no avail, l ventured east of Cedarville.
Talking to a rancher, four years ago, he said, this is Mustang country. I only saw one back then. This time there were two bands and a few others.
The country is dust, desert, sage brush. The horses and a few head of cattle gathered around the water tank. They weren't shy, just a little wary. As always, wonderful to see.

Wild Horses the Brumbies and the Mustangs. A photographic journey that has taken me from the dark muddy forests of Barmah to the high country of the Snowy Mountains, to the Eastern Alpine out to the arid, harsh country of western NSW, South Australia, to the state forests of Bago, Maragle, Tuan, Poona, to far North Queensland, the tropics of Cape York to the hinterland. Travelling to the North Island of New Zealand, 90 mile Beach, Spirits Bay, across the ocean to the deserts of Arizona, Nevada, to the high plains of Wyoming, the Badlands of North Dakota, Steens Mountain Oregon to the Sand Wash Basin in Colorado, the Ozarks of Missouri, California, umpteen other places, then to the wide open spaces of Utah and the majestic Onaqui herd, running wild on the open range. Camera in hand, spending time with the wild horses, quiet moments, beautiful horses.

Wild Horses the Brumbies, 2025.
Looking back over the last twelve months. Many days spent in the mountains and a few visits to the new Hoofs Sanctuary in Victoria.

The year is fast coming to an end. It has been another tough year for the Brumbies, sadly.
Some are being rehomed, thankfully and thanks to the Brumby Rescue folk and the Sanctuaries that are taking them in. Once in a while, there are still some pleasant surprises.
From a distance, obviously wary and before long, they retreat to the safety of the forest.

Wild Horses the Brumbies, out in the mid December sun. From a few different locations, needless to say and saddening, they are getting fewer, harder to find and photograph. Again quiet moments, let the bells of freedom ring, let the hooves of freedom thunder across the mountains.

Wild Horses the Brumbies.
Out in the mountains, Sunday evening and this morning.
Trying conditions, four seasons, including rain and sleet. The brumbies, wary as ever, the images from a few different locations. The beauty of the wild horses, what is to be their fate ? Rehomed or worse to satisfy the agenda of a few individuals.
Always wonderful to see them.
