H5N1 avian flu has reached my part of the world.
It’s hard not to feel the weight of that. I’ve been spending time in their world, photographing some of the same birds for many years, and the thought that I might never see certain individuals again sits heavy. Brown Falcons, especially, seem deeply attached to their local territories. Some of them appear to recognise me by now. Going about their business without much concern while I quietly photograph them flying off to grab a cricket or lizard, then returning to a nearby post to eat. That quiet acceptance that I’ve noticed more over the last year or so feels like a real privilege.
Birds like Falcons, Eagles and Kites overseas have proven highly susceptible. The thought of losing those particular birds, is something I’m finding difficult.
