Documenting in challenging conditions 🦈✨
Part of my upcoming masterclass with is learning how to document in challenging conditions - from learning what kind of training might be useful, preparing for a project and choosing locations to knowing when the pull the pin before it all goes pearshaped.

With time-sensitive projects, we often don’t get to pick a time and day for when we shoot - and even if we do the conditions, especially underwater, can change rapidly.

Preparation and working with the environment helps to create safer working conditions and therefore hopefully a successful project too!

To learn more about my upcoming masterclass follow the link in my bio. Submissions close 17th of February.

BTS Video: The morning of our dive we were informed that the visibility was only a few metres. As we were already on location with limited possibilities to postpone we decided to go ahead with the dive. What we weren’t expecting was the insane amount of surge. 🌊 We had a grand total of 5 minutes with these beautiful Grey Nurse Sharks before the conditions became too volatile and the divemaster led the group away. Sometimes with underwater capture, all you get is a few minutes but luckily we got to try again the next day in slightly more favourable conditions. 😌

34 Today ✨💙

What a surreal year it has been.

Just a year ago I could barely lift a bag of shopping. I was genuinely unsure if I would be able to work as a photographer again.

I am blown away with what my body has been able to achieve in these past 12 months with a lot of support from doctors and practitioners who worked so hard with me to help me figure out how to manage my health conditions.

I don’t think I have ever felt so loved and supported as I have been for this past year and yet so utterly lonely. Living in pain can be a crushingly isolating experience.

Thank you to all of you that have made this past 12 months so much more bearable 💙

To all my loved ones who never once got upset with me for cancelling everything for the billionth time in row, who kept on checking in on me and crafted beautiful meals for me out of the handful of ingredients I could actually digest 🙏

I have so much love for you 💙

And of course happiest of Birthday to my twin brother who’s due to arrive in Australia end of this month for the first time since the lockdown started in March 2020 🥰

A Gamay Story for The Wilderness Society

Portrait of Robert Cooley a Senior ranger for Gamay Rangers - Botany Bay .

"I was born around the ocean. It's my classroom, it's my playground. If I was happy I would go and dive in the ocean, if I was sad I would go and dive in the ocean. If we were going through difficult times and sorry business, we would go down to the ocean—I still do today. Salt is in my blood.

Image 2
“We used to surf out here—we didn't have wetsuits so we would light a fire in this cave in the middle of winter, cook a few mussels and go back out surfing—it was just us kids. There was always plenty to do.”

Image 3
Later in life, Robert would also bring his elderly mother, a proud Dharawal woman, down to the shoreline, back to the place where she grew up and raised her family. Back to the place where she took her last breath. “When it’s also my time, this is the place I would like to be.”

I feel deeply honoured to have had the opportunity to share Roberts story and the incredible conservation and cultural work of Gamay Rangers - Botany Bay right in the heart of the industrial hub of Sydney - Botany Bay.

This story is published in the Wilderness Journal: Stories of nature and people.

PROJECT CALL OUT
Location: Greater Sydney / NSW / Australia

I am looking for participants for my latest project documenting the impacts of COVID-19 on access to health care for vulnerable communities.

This project explores the long terms effects that COVID-19 and lockdowns have on the healthcare system and the people who depend on it. Nearly 50% of Australians suffer from chronic health conditions which are the leading cause of illness, disability and death in Australia. About 18% of the population live with a disability.

The goal of this project is to shed light on the complex needs of people suffering from long term health conditions, during the pandemic and beyond, services we should look at implementing long term to improve accessibility and how a successful vaccine rollout and additional safety measures are crucial for not only people who suffer from COVID-19 but also the 50% of the population whose health and life depends on a functioning medical system.

As someone who heavily relies on medical care this project is very close to my heart. I am looking to document stories and experiences across Greater Sydney and beyond. Both the good, ( such as increased access to Telehealth Services ) the complex and the difficult.

The project will be documented in form of a photo essay and accompanied by a written interview. If you would like to learn more please email [email protected]

Please share this with anyone that may be interested.

Thank you so much. 💙

This project is generously supported by the National Geographic COVID-19 Emergency Fund for Journalists
