52Frames Week 24: Blue Hour, Extra Challenge: Light Painting. Only 11 minutes to nail a shot. No pressure, right...

I pre-scouted four spots, but learnt blue hour is very unforgiving. Five minutes in, the first two locations were a bust - the light flat and the wind was ruining the long exposures. Headed to this final spot with minutes to spare and fired off a few shots. Hastily lit the driftwood with my phone torch (not knowing this was the extra challenge!), and the glassy water reflections pulled it all together. Sometimes the rush is worth it?

52Frames Week 23: Triangular Composition. All aboard! I took this shot on a visit to the Victorian Miniature Railway in Harcourt, Victoria, Australia. I suppose it meets the brief with the triangular vanishing point of the train!? Regardless, great day out and ran by some very passionate staff and volunteers alike- worth a visit if you are in this neck of the woods!

Don't Let The Cuteness Trick You...
Week 22: On The Ground. Flossie the cat is a menace. A recent story; I shut the front door, leaving Flossie safely confined in the laundry - or so I thought. To her, a private, all-you-can-eat buffet.

Whilst out, she somehow hooked a claw into the gap at the bottom of the cupboard and yanked until the magnetic catch gave way, revealing the motherlode: an unsecured bulk container of premium dry cat food.

I returned to find the cupboard wide open, the food container tipped over and partially devoured - the culprit, Flossie lay flat on her back on the tiles, completely immobilized by around three-hundred grams of stolen cat food, offering me a single, unapologetic grunt.

These days the cat food is secured elsewhere, however; without fail every time Flossie is in the laundry she has that door opened up in seconds!

Neon Shower
52Frames Week 21: Water, Extra Challenge: 1/4000+. A bit creatively blocked this week, but ended up taking an interest in the water-fall shower head. When shooting I really wished I had some gels for my flash to get some different light, instead I completed some bold colour balance edits in post to give this shot a bit of inspiration from the bubbles seen in soft drink commercials.

Pyrotography
52Frames Week 19: Slow Shutter. A mashup between pyromaniac and photography - pyrotography! This week was awesome, a chance to try something new and very enjoyable, but also with my family! I enjoyed understanding how to do something I had seen, but never completed, and my family enjoyed the spectacle, and having a go too!

⚠️Note: Steel wool photography can be pretty dangerous (spinning burning materials!) This shot was completed with a focus on safety, conducted on wet ground far from any flammable hazards. All necessary precautions were taken, including the use of protective woolen clothing, leather gloves/shoes, and safety glasses to protect from the sparks. A fire extinguisher was also kept on hand, finally; ensured every ember was controlled and the area remained safe before, during and afterwards.

Inspired By: Gary Ramage
52Frames Week 17: Inspired By A Photographer. I approached this week’s challenge with a specific tribute in mind. To honour ANZAC Day, I drew inspiration from Gary Ramage - a 3x Walkley Award-winning photojournalist, veteran, and official photographer for the Australian War Memorial.

My goal was to mirror his signature style, focusing on high contrast, saturation, and purposeful camera angles to capture an impactful moment from a local commemorative ceremony. By studying Ramage's work, I was able to pay homage to both the veterans we honour on ANZAC day as well as the veteran artists who document our history.

We do not seek to glorify war, but to honour the courage and sacrifice of those who fought for our freedom. Lest we forget.

52Frames Week 16: Portrait (Of A Stranger). Met Codi in a local laneway. We chatted for a few minutes while I shot; it’s amazing what you can learn about someone in such a short time. He’d just finished night shift in the fast food industry and was winding down with a smoke and a Coke before heading to sleep.

This week’s challenge is always tough, but rewarding. I headed out on a sunny Sunday morning specifically hunting for a stranger to photograph. I hesitated at first - but the moral of the story is to just take the shot! I was immediately drawn to Codi’s beanie and the cigarette as a prop. I knew right away it would be a great frame. Processed in Capture One, utilising the "match style" feature to hit the specific look I had in mind.
