My name is Cameron Fowles (but everyone calls me Cam) and I'm based on the north side of Brisbane in beautiful Queensland. Vietnam Top Gear tour day 9 - Mai Chau to Nghia Lo
Out last full day of riding through the mountains today and the country put on an amazing show for us.

Just out of Mai Chau we stopped by the side of the road at some rice paddies and the most amazing morning light - I was in photographic heaven and could have stayed here for hours. If I'd bought my gum boots I would have down there with them.

We from here we continued on through winding roads and spectacular scenery until we stopped for a snack and to wait for the ferry. We loaded our bikes into the tiny ferry and head out across the lake - surrounded by more incredible views.

Not long after we got started again we stopped off at a road side market to check out the fresh produce and hand crafted souveneirs - for some reason, nobody was tempted to pick up a fresh rodent. They didn't look very appetising to be honest.

Out last overnight stay was in Nghia Lo as the locals were preparing for a huge festival that was coming up in a few days (The 2026 Mường Lò Culture and Tourism Festival) so there was singing and dancing rehersals going on well into the evening.

Downstairs in the reception area of the hotel I spotted a vintage Hi-Fi setup complete with reel-to-reel tape player and turntable that took me right back to the late 70's. Vietnam really does have a little taste of everything.

One thing from Nghai Lo that will stay with me forever was when I walked past a child care centre early in the morning and they were playing English childrens songs like "B-I-N-G-O" and "10 litle ducks went out one day" - it reminded me that some things really are international and cross the language barrier. I popped in and said a quick hello to the staff and waved at some of the very intrigued toddlers.

Vietnam Top Gear tour day 8 - Mai Chau homestay
A bigger post this time but it was a big night so it deserves it.

Many families in the village of Mai Chau have converted their homes to homestays to supplement the village income. We stayed at one of these and it was a night to remember.
We got to experience some beautiful Thai dancing, lots and lots of rice w**e and even some "traditional" Macarena dancing. I'm not sure how ancient it is but everyone had an amazing time.

Some of the singles in the group bunked down in a shared dorm for the night and, needless to say, chaos and mischief ensued. Especially after the aforementioned rice w**e, followed by drunken swimming and more dancing.

In the morning I was glad for the serenity of the village so went for a bit of a walk to explore. They have their own rice paddies, fish breeding ponds and fields to grow produce so the village is heavily self-sufficient. Much like much of Vietnam.

Vietnam Top Gear tour day 7/8 - Thai Hoa to Ngoc Lac and Mai Chau
A couple of days riding in this post - the little village we stayed at overnight was very quiet and it was nice to just walk around and get some food and ice cream (MIXUE makes the best ice cream cones in Vietnam).

As we were getting ready to leave the hotel, I spotted a pool hall across the road - the kids were super excited to show off how cool they were and it reminded me of hanging around the "pinball parlour" as a teenager, smoking and acting tough. Some things never change, no matter where you are. And for those with a keen eye - yes, thats a b**g he's smoking but it's only to***co. Its very common in Vietnam and totally legal.

Onwards and upwards, past a huge dam and hydro-electric facility, we stopped at a bamboo processing plant. They were turning bamboo logs into the raw material for chopsticks and tooth picks - really fascinating to watch.

Then we stopped at a tourist farm for some sight seeing. The huge water wheels are made the same way they have been for hundreds of years and use diverted river flow to irrigate the fields and water the animals. So simple yet so clever and made with the most basic materials.

At the end of the ride we arrived at our village home stay for the night. This was one of the highlights of the trip (for some) so I'll save that for the next post.

Vietnam Top Gear tour day 5/6 - Phong Nha to Thai Hoa
Today was our biggest riding day of the tour so, after a good rest we were off nice and early.

Before we headed off I made sure to visit the morning produce markets - they're always amazing to see and locals are totally not expecting some random old white guy to show up. They're always happy and friendly and quick with a smile even though they're not exactly sure what I'm doing. The sights, sounds and smells are an assault on the senses and a great wake up early in the morning.

On the way to Thai Hoa, riding through more lush forest and mlountains, we stopped at a rubber plantation, a tea plantation and even a brick making "factory" - theres so much to see and explore in Vietnam.

After a long and tiring ride, we were all exhausted when we got to the hotel so it was a quick wander around, a delicious banh mi and off to find a "night cap" - strangely, at a B**r Hall in Vietnam they have no idea what a bourbon and coke is. I'm not exactly sure what I ended up drinking but it was delicious.

In the morning I found another fresh produce market so checked it out as well - its well worth getting up early, just to experience the real people and experiences.

Vietnam Top Gear tour day 4 - Phong Nha
No riding today - just cruising the river, exploring the huge caves and relaxing.

These aren't just any old caves, they're some of the biggest caves in the world and they're incredibly old. The water dripping down through the limestone has created living sculptures throughout that are breathtaking in their beauty.

Inside the cave, the temperature dropped, the bright sunlight was left behind and everything was quiet and tranquil. Floating silently though the caves was almost like being in another world - it felt so isolated and surreal.

And to top it off, late in the afternoon I found a cocktail bar making near-perfect wh***ey sours. While I sat by the river watching the sunset over the mountains, the staff would walk across the road to bring me my drinks and the world was a very nice place to be. Vietnam is a very special place.

Vietnam Top Gear tour day 3/4 - Khe Sanh to Phong Nha
Today was our only rainy day of the tour and it pelted down - a real tropical downpour. The good thing was that it cooled us all down from the heat and humidity.

This stretch was possibly some of the most spectacular scenery of the trip as we headed higher into the misty limestone mountains and flooded rivers on our way up to Phong Nha, high in the hills. I lost count of how many waterfalls we passed.

For a quick distraction, we rode across a very high, narrow and swaying suspension bridge over a raging river - for no particular reason than it was there and a bit of a challenge to those with a fear of heights. Then we rode back across again!

One of the highlights of the day for me was when we stopped at a quiet little village for lunch and the local kids all came out to investigate the dripping wet tourists on their noisy motorbikes. Some of the group had brought lollies and activity sets to hand out to the kids so they were VERY popular. The silly white man with the big camera was good for a laugh too.

Phong Nha itself is definitely aimed at the adventure tourists and cave explorers along with plenty of facilities for back packers. A few members of the group spent quite a bit of time (and b**r money) in the BEE PUB on our first night in town.
Luckily tomorrow is a rest day with plenty of time to relax, grab a massage and enjoy a salt coffee or two (yes, salt coffee is a thing in Vietnam and its amazing).

Vietnam Top Gear tour day 2/3 - Hue to Khe Sanh
After a couple of days of solid riding, the group were starting to feel the first wave of fatigue so when we arrived at the Khe Sahn military base and memorial late in the afternoon, the mood was sombre.

The memorial is very much a political statement by the Vietnamese and paints a negative image of the western soliders who were based there - it actually felt a bit awkward being there as if we were being made to feel guilty.

Heading down stairs into the trenches, almost unchanged since the base was abandoned by the US army in 1968, was incredibly creepy and definitely sent a shiver up my spine.

Khe Sahn was the scene of a 77 day long siege during the vietnam war and caused the surrounding areas to be massively bombarded by US forces - it almost feels like the town of Khe Sanh never really recovered and some of the older people appear resentful towards westerners.

Its very much a working town with very little tourism and a grittier feeling than almost anywhere else we visited during the tour. Its not somewhere I will ever forget, thats for sure.

Vietnam Top Gear tour day 1/2 - Hoi An to Hue
Our first stop today was at a sculpture factory - run almost entirely by local women who hand craft everything from tiny jade figurines all the way up to huge marble statues. All of the work is done by hand and is incredibly detailed.

From here we headed up to the infamous Hai Van pass over the mountains - our first real taste of the incredible riding roads and scenery that we'd be experiencing over the tour. Our poor little 150cc LIFAN motorbikes really copped it today.

As we approached Hue, we stopped at the city of the dead, a town almost entirely made up of crypts and family temples for their departed loved ones. They really know how to do a cemetary in Vietnam and no expense is spared to honour the dead.

Arriving in Hue, the first thing I realised is that its a crazy mix of old and new - from wet markets and produce in the street to modern bars and take-away shops, side by side with each other. Several times I was asked by random men on scooters if I wanted to by some "ma*****na" or meet a "nice lady" - it's just this sort of place.

After a good sleep, we headed for a tour of the Imperial City (Citadel) from where the Nguyen Dynasty ruled Vietnam from 1802 - 1945. We only got to explore a tiny part of the 520 acre "city within a city" and even that was spectacular.
One of the shots shows bullet holes in a giant metal vase - these were from the Vietnam war in the 60s and are a stark reminder of Vietnam's recent, turbulent past.

Back in 2008, the gang from Top Gear released their Vietnam special - the guys bought some old, under powered motorbikes and rode from one end of the country to the other.

Since I first saw that episode, I knew I had to do the same tour myself. It took nearly 20 years to happen but I finally did it. It was a hell of an adventure and I'm exausted now that I'm home but it was so worth it.

The ride started in Hoi An, in central Vietnam and headed up through the mountains for 10 days to finally end in Hanoi in the north. Thanks to for bringing this all together and for the amazing team that we had with us.

Day one: Hoi An.
Hoi An really is a city of two personalities - of an afternoon, as the sun sets, the tourists pour in and the river boats and floating lanterns come out. The markets, bars and restaurants open and the noise level starts to increase. Every purchase is a haggle and the locals revel in the game with the tourists.

Then, with all the tourists asleep back at their hotels, the mornings are calm and peaceful. Its time to sit with the local women for a (strong) cup of Vietnamese coffee or chat with the men as they prepare to head out fishing for the day - the tourist boats returning to their original purpose for a few hours. The language barrier is nothing that can't be solved with a smile or a hand gesture and the people are truly welcoming and warm.

We then go to choose our bikes and, fresh-faces and naive headed out for our first taste of Vietnam traffic and riding on the "wrong" side of the road. We had no idea of the adventures, excitment and drama that lay ahead of us.
