✈️ Exercise Pitch Black Returns to Australia's Top End for 2026

The Royal Australian Air Force's largest international air combat exercise, Exercise Pitch Black 2026, will take place across Northern Australia from 20 July to 7 August.

More than 100 military aircraft and personnel from 19 nations will participate in three weeks of complex flying operations, making it one of the largest multinational military aviation exercises in the world.

For aviation enthusiasts, there are two great opportunities to see the action up close:

📍 Mindil Beach Flying Display – Thursday, 23 July (5:00pm–6:30pm)
📍 RAAF Darwin Open Day – Saturday, 1 August (free entry with pre-booked tickets)

Expect an impressive mix of modern military aircraft from Australia and partner nations, with flying displays, static aircraft and the chance to meet military personnel from around the globe.

Who's planning a trip to Darwin for Pitch Black 2026?

The RAAF Darwin Open Day on Saturday, 1 August, is also a free community event, with pre-booked tickets required for entry and park-and-ride bus transfers. Tickets must be pre-booked through https://www.trybooking.com/au/event/1577591 ; no tickets will be available at the event.

The photos below were all taken during PB24.

I finally got some port side shots of the US Navy KC-130T, 162311 - BLOODHOUND 405 from VX-30 that is deployed to Edinburgh after she returned back from a trip to RAAF base Richmond this afternoon. This side of the aircraft the sticker/decal isn't ripped on the tail.

A bunch of visitors into RAAF base Edinburgh over the last few days. USAF C-17 Globemaster - 06-6160, REACH241 from Travis AFB arriving in from Guam.

The Australian Army's new UH-60M Blackhawks made their first appearance to Edinburgh with a quick fuel stop before heading up North to the Cultana training area for an Exercise.

JUSTICE a flight of 3 with A60-003, A60-008 and A60-017 arrived in formation yesterday afternoon. This afternoon VALKYRIE11, A60-011 and VALKYRIE12, A60-018 arrived, sadly could only get some very long range recognition shots of these two.

Some more Boeing 747 history from Pinal Airpark in Arizona.
The two ex Northwest Cargo jumbos are:
N617US Boeing 747-251F/SCD and
N618US Boeing 747-251F/SCD
The TWA example is N129TW Boeing 747-128

I am not sure what the all white one is.
Could be N303TW Boeing 747-257B. Can anyone confirm this?

✈️ THROWBACK: Ansett's Forgotten Jumbo in the Arizona Desert

While looking through some older photos, I came across an aircraft that immediately caught my attention—an ex-Ansett Boeing 747 quietly parked at the rear of Pinal Airpark, Arizona.

Captured in September 2020, this aircraft began life as VH-INH, a Boeing 747-312 first flown in 1983. During its years with Ansett Australia, the jumbo represented the airline's long-haul ambitions and was one of the most recognisable aircraft in the carrier's fleet.

Following the collapse of Ansett in 2001, VH-INH passed through several operators and registrations before eventually appearing in storage wearing the U.S. registration N792BA.

Seeing a former Ansett 747 in the Arizona desert is a striking reminder of how far these aircraft can travel throughout their careers. Once carrying thousands of passengers across international routes, this classic Jumbo Jet now rests among the rows of retired airliners at one of the world's most famous aircraft storage facilities.

After 13 years of service, Virgin Australia is preparing to bid farewell to the Airbus A320.

Introduced into the Virgin Australia fleet in 2013 through the formation of Virgin Australia Regional Airlines (VARA), the type has become a familiar sight across Western Australia, supporting both regional and resources-sector operations. With fleet renewal well underway, the final three A320s are expected to retire by mid-June 2026, bringing an end to the airline's Airbus narrowbody era. Their departure marks the close of a significant chapter in Virgin Australia's history as the carrier transitions to newer Boeing 737 and Embraer E190-E2 aircraft.

A couple of afternoon wintery pics in different lighting conditions today. BLOODHOUND 405 - US Navy C-130T, 162311 from VX-30 arriving back into Edinburgh from Woomera in some very nice light. And MC-55A Peregrine - A51-004 on her second flight since arriving and now carrying her RAAF serial after arriving as N567G. She came back from a sortie in some very ordinary conditions for photography, two minutes before it was pouring with rain.
