A selection of black amd whites images from Brisbane City yesterday. A number of these were shot in parallel with a film camera, but will need to get developed.

The Citizens' War Memorial in Christchurch features a striking arrangement of allegorical bronze figures designed by sculptor William Trethewey, each laden with deep historical symbolism. At the base sits Sacrifice, a grieving mother with outstretched arms who represents the Mothers of the Empire mourning their fallen sons. Flanking her on the lower tier are Youth, a figure holding an uplifted torch to signify the young lives cut short, and Valour (or Protection), depicted as St George clad in full armour to embody military courage. Just above them stand the ideals hoped for after the conflict: Peace, holding an olive branch and a dove, alongside a blindfolded Justice carrying her scales. Towering over the entire monument at the apex of the central stone cross is a majestic, unnamed winged angel who is shown breaking the sword of battle, serving as a powerful ultimate symbol of the destruction of war and the triumph of enduring peace

Kangaroo Bluff Battery Historic Site

"The appearance of Russian warships in the area in 1873 prompted the need for a third battery to support the existing Battery Point and Queens Battery. Perched on a steep bluff in the waterside suburb of Bellerive, construction of the Kangaroo Bluff Battery or fort, as it is also known, was a four-year process completed in October 1884.

The original site was surrounded by a moat and prickly hawthorn hedges as protection from enemies on foot. Below ground were stores and speaking tubes for communicating through the thick rock walls. Today, visitors can walk in the footsteps of the soldiers through the remaining passageways, with views to the river beyond.

Construction was carried out by the Public Works Department, at a cost of about $16,300. At that time workers were paid 50 cents per day. The opening shot was fired from the battery in 1884. Imperial troops were withdrawn from Australia between 1870 and 1901 and so each state had to provide its own defence force. For this reason the Kangaroo Bluff Battery was manned by the Tasmanian Artillery Company volunteers."

A selection of photos from The Watts 4 Breakfast event organised by Queensland Warbirds and Vintage Aircraft Association held last Sunday just gone. A great collection of aircraft which managed to catch flying in. Sadly I didn't get all the planes.
