Cannonvale waking up. πŸŒ…

While the clouds roll across a pastel Whitsunday sunrise, the streets below are already coming to life β€” morning traffic flowing, doors opening and another working day getting underway around Centro.

It’s easy to get caught up in the rush, but from above, even the morning commute looks pretty good in paradise. πŸš—β˜€οΈπŸŒ΄

Outback Queensland at first light. πŸ‡¦πŸ‡ΊπŸš‚

A freight train carving its way through red earth, dry scrub and seemingly endless country as the morning light begins to stretch across the landscape.

Long tracks, open roads and miles of nothing but Queensland outback. πŸŒ…

πŸŒ… Sunrise over Pigeon Island, Whitsundays.

Pigeon Island sitting quietly in the foreground, boats anchored across Pioneer Bay and another Whitsundays sunrise lighting up the horizon. β›΅πŸŒ΄

Despite being only around 1.8 hectares, Pigeon Island has an interesting connection to its feathered visitors. The island is known as a seasonal roosting area for Torresian imperial-pigeons, historically also called Nutmeg pigeons, which migrate into coastal Queensland and the Whitsundays during the warmer months. πŸ•ŠοΈ While the surrounding seagrass meadows provide important habitat for dugongs, green turtles and plenty of marine life. πŸ’πŸŒΏπŸŒ…

Shute Harbour β€” Then vs Now. 🌴⏳

Same incredible part of the Whitsundays, but a very different view.

It’s amazing to look back at how much Shute Harbour has changed over the decades β€” the buildings, waterfront, vessels and infrastructure β€” while that unmistakable Whitsundays backdrop remains. πŸ’™

The original photo was kindly shared by Mariska Kovacik from Whitsundays Chat, with permission to use it. πŸ™Œ

The original photo has been mentioned as being from the 80s, although some believe it could date back even earlier, possibly the 60s or 70s. I’d love to hear from anyone who remembers Shute Harbour around this time.

What do you remember most about Shute Harbour back then?
Did you work there, catch a ferry from here, head out fishing, visit the islands, or have a memorable fishing story or local experience connected to this place?

πŸ‘‡ Share your memories and stories in the comments. It would be great to piece together a little more of Shute Harbour’s history through the people who experienced it.
