Driving to Strathalbyn this morning to catch up for a meeting regarding some photography with a well-known legend of the industry, I was about 1 km from Strathalbyn and this prominant billboard appeared. It was about a year ago now that I shot this image for SAPOL. ( Assisted by my loyal colleagues’s @ Ryan Carter Mike Annese ). We selected a generic looking car to bring into the studio, then proceeded to execute the lighting to make it look like it was out on the street at night. To portray that the car had been pulled over to the side of the road and the individual inside the car driving was in the process of engaging in an lick test and subsequently being detected for co***ne use. It is amazing how far SAPOL have come with drug and alcohol detection technology. I’ve been doing these outdoor advertising campaigns for SAPOL (formerly known as motor accident commission) for over 20 years now. Dozens of campaigns over the years and reportedly countless lives saved due to the message getting through. Well done to SAUCE agency for this concept and clever copy line.

I photographed this campaign for Internode the title was “are you being taken for a ride?” It was intended to highlight Internode's reputation for award-winning customer service and good value and high performance broadband to thousands of dissatisfied BigPond customers, who were at the time, leaving the telco's broadband service each week in droves. The logistics of getting it all done in one shot was not possible so I jumped in the car and drove up to roxby downs in the middle of summer looking to capture an appropriate red sand, empty vast void, that matched the brief that I had been given. I photographed about a dozen different backgrounds and it was decided on this one to be used for the hero shot. I then separately photographed the stunning Kombi van back in Adelaide a week later at West Beach near the boat ramp. There was a patch of Sandy dirt that looked similar in colour to the Roxby Downs image. I chose this location by the sea so that there was nothing behind me to reflect in the hubcaps of the car except the ground and the blue sky behind me. It matched the Roxby image empty landscape and therefore made the montage of the two images together more successful and realistic.. We had great fun with all the people piling inside the van that day . I was directing/communicating to them to make it look like they were desperate to get out The different variations that we came up with were hilarious We even shut all the doors and windows to let it get really hot in there for them so that they could portray the desperation to get out of the van in a realistic manner. It was a hot day!The image was used on huge billboards all around Adelaide at the time and on the back of buses.

It takes its breath from southern sea,
And cuts a line through red-dirt mystery.
A ribbon of golden steel, a rolling home,
Where the sunburnt plains and mountains roam.
No camel’s back, but iron spine,
It follows the path of the old, slow line.
Through desert silence, ochre haze,
A quiet hum of ancient days.
From Adelaide’s plains to the Top End's sun,
Two thousand miles, the journey run.
It shakes off the dust in the heart of the land,
A traveller’s tale on the shifting sand.
Through flooding rains and the heat-haze glare,
Ghan still journeys, passing there.

I travelled interstate to photograph this portrait of Shaw and Smith warehouse manager and his greyhounds. This was for an advertisement about the people behind the brand showcasing their personality , so there was a lot involved in achieving this shot. Re-organising the warehouse and filling any gaps with pallets of wine, strategically hiding our lighting and dealing with the stunning greyhounds that were racing champions although not particularly fond of standing still for our photograph. So many elements to bring a good portrait together, the travel to get there, managing all the equipment, dealing with all the variables on site and executing the portrait to plan.

Portrait of winemaker Peter Caldwell. Peter is the esteemed wine maker for Dairymple Vineyards in Tasmania, part of the Hill Smith family vineyard stable. I photographed Peter on a visit here to Yalumba winery. The incredible curved internal walls with its 150+ year history was the perfect backdrop for the portrait.
