These are my tears, an ocean for you.

I created this image with simply the intention to try something new - to challenge my skills. For the scarf I used an image I took on a boat in the vast southern ocean below Tasmania. It filled me with awe.

The wildlife, the vastness and space, the power beneath the waves.

It was an image to contain the Universe. To encapsulate the idea that we are often blinded to the power around us.

But today it took another meaning. Today it seems melancholic in my grief.

What story does it tell you?

The Universe Drips…

The Universe runs….

The Universe is…

I woke up on Saturday morning with this image in my mind. Simple yet powerful.

I created for want of creating, for need of creating, to tell a story.

But that story is also for you to tell - what does this image say to you?

We don’t understand everything.

We don’t know why, or how, our brains are truely wired. We don’t know how it feels to be in someone else’s head…

…but we can catch a glimpse when your own brain and mind seem to betray you.

Last year this is how I felt. That the shadows were so dark, that my memories, my thoughts were jumbled and faded like an ink drip.

I could not focus, I could not find words, I could not cope, I could not remember…

So slowly I found my way back. But that feeling of betrayal remains…

If you have ever felt this way, I hear you. If you feel this way, I care. If you need to chat, reach out. ❤️

Do you know that feeling?

The one where you have pushed and prodded and stuffed. Where you have changed the way you look to conform to the idea.

Your idea. Your idea of others ideas.

That inside you, ready to burst out is your true form, the one that is the right colour, the right fit, the right shape.

Why do we do that to ourselves to conform. It’s not necessarily growth, or being our “best selves”.

I think I’m going through an existential crisis 🤣. No, I am not a rabbit inside, I’m a dragon 🐉. Perhaps I have a few more layers to unzip before I get down to the true creative that lives inside. The one who allows her imagination to play again…

Do you ever have this feeling?

It has been a long time since I have actively scheduled my creativity.

My thoughts are all over the place - big ideas are sprouting, but I procrastinate because I don’t have the props I want, I don’t have a tidy room, I have to paint the door…

Isn’t it funny how we know we desperately want to do something, but we are so overwhelmed by where to start that we just make excuses and fill our time with something else? I almost didn’t participate in because I didn’t think I could commit fully, but I decided I would still do 30 portraits and maybe take a little lo by nger doing it.

But I admit, I was uninspired the other night when I sat in front of the camera, but I took some shots and changed my focus….

Scroll to see the portraits that I used to create this grid.

My goal for this is to embrace my creativity, to explore the imaginary worlds that exist in our dreams, and to schedule in an activity that I love.

What do you really want to create time for?

This year I signed myself up for the run by the amazing photographer .nicolephoto . The purpose was to get me back in the practice of creating - one self portrait each day for 30 days.

I did a 365 self portrait project back in 2016/17 - how hard could 30 days be?

Well, life got in the way and I wasn’t prepared for June to come at us so quickly! 😂 Thus, I am a bit behind at the beginning, but that is okay.

I am beginning to accept that it is okay to miss things, to let things slide, and it reminded me of this portrait I made in 2018 “S is for Slipping”.

Life isn’t defined by a day, or wether or not you stuck to a program, life is about moments of enjoyment.

I enjoy sharing my work on this platform, so I may be bending the rules a little to fit into my life, but that’s totally okay, right?

Do you have trouble fitting in everything too? Do you make time for things that you enjoy?

When you have a dream… and then you wake up to find it has happened in real life!

When I started my journey as a photographer, I had the idea that I would be a National Geographic animal and landscape photographer, but it turns out that I’m not a morning person 😜 and I hate mosquitos (even though they love me 😂).

I found a love photographing people, and creating surreal self portraits.

Then I opened a business. Then I had a dream to exhibit my work. Then I started working towards that dream.

I practiced, and practiced. I enter some work in competitions, I didn’t hit the mark. I practiced some more. I entered some more.

I received 3 honourable mentions last year in the 19th Julia Margaret Cameron Awards, and today have 2 pieces in the group exhibition here in Barcelona!

The dream has not ended yet… it is just the beginning and I am loving the direction it is heading!

What dreams have you had that are coming true for you?

For those who don’t know, we are on our way to Barcelona for the Julia Margaret Cameron Exhibition… but first Granada!

We haven’t had a holiday overseas for so long, and it is exciting to see and experience new things and culture, to seep up the history and to take a break!

Today we hiked through the lower parts of the Sierra Nevada mountains - so beautiful, and a great way to escape the bustle of the tourist areas.

Sometimes we forget to just take a break and to play… Ad adults we seem to go through life thinking that some adventures and experiences are only for the young… but that’s just not true!

One of the things we have done on this trip is a couple of Segway tours - not the ordinary thing to do (but amazing in hilly Granada), but a bit of fun while seeing the sites - and making a new friend in the tour guide. It also took us to places we didn’t know about and views that we would not have reached otherwise.

When was the last time you just played as an adult? Did it reward you with something you didn’t expect?

Have you ever been curious as to where the Easter Bunny comes from?

As a fine art portrait photographer I love to use symbology, and the Easter Bunny is no exception, and I am always curious as to where these symbols come from and what they actually represent.

Easter is a christian celebration filled with the themes of sacrifice and rebirth. In the wider community we celebrate the re-birth, but the symbols draw from both themes - and they don’t all originate from christian religious icons.

The Easter Bunny is a relatively new symbol, and although the exact origins are not known, it is thought to have come from the German tradition of an egg laying hare called “Osterhase” - children would build nests in which the hare would lay colourful eggs. Rabbits have an ancient history as symbols of fertility and re-birth, and thus, two symbols have merged into one creating the Easter Bunny and his basket of eggs.

“And why eggs?” I hear you ask. Well, that probably originated from pagan celebrations for spring and new-life. They have been used since ancient times to symbolise new life, and religion has adopted the idea to symbolise the re-birth of Jesus. Decorating eggs has been found as far back as the 13th century and is thought to have come about when it was forbidden to eat eggs during Lent. The eggs would be decorated to mark the ending of the period of penance and fasting, and they would be eaten as a celebration.

Colours are symbols too. During Easter, pink represents jubilant celebration and new beginnings and gold represents the glory and triumph of the resurrection of Jesus, and purple is the colour of Lent.

All of that aside, we don’t often think about all the symbols we use in life and in celebrations in particular, but we all recognise the Easter Bunny and his colourful basket of eggs.

Being the curious one I am, what Easter traditions do you have? and the most important question, what is your favourite Easter egg?
