‘A Mutual Meeting’

Two full-length Ghan trains in Alice Springs Station, one Southbound and one Northbound movement. Pretty special indeed!

NR19 and NR75 are working 4DA8E, a 33-car train, the Ghan Expedition Service from Darwin, NT, to Adelaide, SA. Meanwhile, Ghan service 4AD8 is being worked by NR74 and NR18 stand on their 26-car train in Alice Springs, NT, after coming from Adelaide, SA, leaving a day earlier, on Wednesday, 23rd of September, 2026.

“Cranking Her Up in the Territory!”

GWA008 and GWA002 smoke it up after leaving Alice Springs in the Northern Territory heading for Adelaide (Gillman Yard, Port Adelaide, SA) while working Aurizon Super Freighter 3DA6, on Wednesday, 23rd of September, 2026.

The service was spotted near the Old Ghan Railway Museum to the right just behind the camera.

A West Aussie W in the NT?
Yep, all the way from Western Australia, the beautiful W Class 4-8-2 Mountain types were introduced in the 1950s and had relatively short lives before becoming surplus and being snapped by preservation societies in South Australia, the NT, and their home state of WA.

The Old Ghan Museum in Alice Springs acquired W924 in the mid-1980s and restored to use along their short 10km section of the Old Ghan Railway.

In Quorn, at the Pichi Richi Railway where I volunteer, there are no less than four locomotives of the W Class in the collection. Their numbers are W931 (used for spare parts), W933 (as a majority complete loco for possible future restoration), W934 is operational alongside W916 which was restored as Silverton Tramways W22.

Peterborough’s Steamtown had an operational W, W901 for a time but no longer unfortunately. They also had a PMR Class Pacific which was pretty cool too!

The Hotham Valley Railway in WA has a few W’s also.

Aurizon’s Northbound Super Freighter 2AD1 departs Marla in the Far North of South Australia after a crew change while being worked by GWA002, GWA008 & FQ01, on Tuesday, 8th of September, 2026.

This service was bound for Darwin in the Northern Territory, originating from Gillman Yard near Port Adelaide in South Australia.

The happiest 90th birthday to the Duke of Edinburgh, number 621. On this day in 1936, it emerged from the main construction and repair plant of the South Australian Railways, the famed Islington Railway Workshops, near Kilburn, in suburban Adelaide, to work express passenger trains throughout the extensive broad gauge network of South Australia.

Here’s a few pics we’ve taken of the Duke over the last 11 years whilst in its green and later the striking black livery with red lining, the colours it wore throughout the 1950s and 60s.

Caleb’s second cover photo this year for the National Railway Museum’s Catch Point magazine. His first photo was that of SteamRanger’s ALCo 845 and now we have his second photo of SteamRanger’s Brill Railcar on the front cover!
