To all my photography buds, have you ever wondered about the best ways to light up subjects on a cyclorama? Want to know the best ways to light up the background evenly? Or how to minimise spill?

There are techniques out there that are highly effective and some that aren't.

The lighting guru that is Sam Oster (with support from me!) is running a workshop on how to light subjects on a cyclorama at our studio Cog Creative Space in Norwood, Tues 27th Aug 6-9pm. If you're keen, head to https://www.eventbrite.com.au/e/profoto-studio-5-ways-to-light-a-cyclorama-with-sam-oster-shaun-li-tickets-947348774687?aff=oddtdtcreator : )

Credit goes to the team of Kris, Dan and Zac for creating the perfect on location lighting setup to create a visceral mood and feel. All I needed to do was add a little bit of fill light to the faces and capture the moment : )

FUN LIL’ GIVEAWAY TIME - If you can guess the exact drink that is holding, you win a mini portrait session (30min) from moi! Same style, super moody, sweet canvas backdrop. Redeemable weekdays only. Location , 20 Boskenna Avenue Norwood, Adelaide.

Drop your guess in the comments below. Up to 3 guesses per individual, 1 guess per day : ) Winner will be notified via Instagram!

A bit of background on the evolution of this image. Initially there was no drink. I was shooting portraits of the super talented-voice-of-a-Broken-Hill-angel singer, Mason. During the shoot I remembered a very cool Matthew McConaghey portrait for a Whiskey ad I’d seen shot by . Check out his work it’s amazing. I decided to use that image as a reference, so I searched my office, and found some booze from a previous shoot, and added the drink to enhance the atmosphere of the image.

The way I see it, the best way to pay respect to sources of artistic inspiration is to use individualised elements of said work as a source of motivation. For the McConaghey shot, I used the tone and feel of the image (+drink) as the reference for inspiration rather than copying the image shot for shot and blatantly ripping it off. See final slide for reference image.

Images were shot on one of our handpainted canvas backdrops at Cog. Key light was a D2 with a 5” Octa to camera left, feathered to create a very subtle fall off. Whilst the Rim/Hair light was a B10 plus on a 1x4 gridded strip box with 1/2 CTO gel setup high on a C-stand with boom arm. As always thanks again to the awesome staff for providing us with lights.

At , we don’t just aim to support photographers, videographers & cinematographers. We aim to be a hub for the broader arts community & specifically performers. We love working with dancers, theatre performers and singers within our studio, collaborating with them and witnessing their amazing talents 🔥

A whilst back, super smouldery singer dropped by Cog for some images. And by chance he’s using some of those promo pics for an epic tour in QLD (check his account for his tour details). And if ya got any mates up north - tell em to go check out his talents!

Portrait session with model/actor/entrepeneur extraordinaire - 2 different backdrops and a whole range of expressions : )

Lighting breakdown explained below;

Shot using our favourite cyclorama. Image set 1, lit with 1 x b10 modded with a large umbrella with diffusion and a reflector on the shadow side to fill in the shadows. We also used this same setup with some variation (See previous post) for some full body images.

Image set two - a custom hand painted canvas backdrop, using a lighting setup that my lighting guru has got me into recently. A dual light setup, 2 x b10’s - 1 light positioned at camera left and 1 to camera right with ideally 2 x 1x4 strip boxes, both at same angles (the strip box on the left aimed at Sarah’s right shoulder and vice versa). However I only had one on the day, so for the camera right one was actually a 3x3 that was then flagged off to create a similar strip light to my soft box!

Thanks again to for providing us with profoto lighting 👋

Key images that came from the .sushi shoot. Ibuki is a new Omakase and Sushi-Ben (lunch box) experience that is delivering high end sushi like you've never seen before in Adelaide! Headed up by Sushi Master who was trained in Tokyo 🍱 Our brief was to capture both food, hero and action shots for a range of platforms from website to socials. The aim was to create a polished, refined look that was a more unique than just simple white backgrounds utilising natural lighting.

How did we do this? We used a combination of darker toned stone/marble flat lays from .official for the actual food shots to provide some refined character.

And we lit our images with contrast, cut out a lot of ambient light to introduce mood and used warm gels to provide some atmosphere and mood to our images. Most of the action and people shots, including the portrait with chef yohei utilised 1/2 CTO gels.

All images shot with z6ii or d750 and lit with B10 +.

A talented creative mate of mine, recently stepped into the role of a full time freelancer. Whilst thinking of some sage advice to pass onto him, one key realisation hit me. Whilst it is an incredibly challenging career, one amazing aspect of being a freelancer is the ability to operate with the identity of my choosing. I get to create a brand that represents my personality and core values. And by being authentic I get to collaborate with like minded businesses who inspire me and shoot for clients who I see eye to eye with and connect with.

A bit of BTS from a great shoot in collaboration with Argon Design who are creating the website that the images will be used at. We shot at the very picturesque + cafe for 6 degrees consulting, operated by the fantastic .egan and .primus who were such great clients to work for. Lighting assist provided by the ever enthusiastic Aiden Smith from ..

The idea of a living a sustainable life has always fascinated me. There are so many things to look at, I find it overwhelming. I often feel guilt for the impact of my modern day lifestyle. Yet, I'm not quite ready to pack it all up and move into an eco-cabin in the middle of whoop whoop 2000kms from the nearest human being. At least not just yet...

That's why i'm so glad I got the chance to shoot for , one of the directors of who's interest and unbound passion for sustainability engulfs my own. I learnt so much about sustainable energy during our shoot and the moving parts involved in living a sustainable lifestyle. I believe so much in what Anup does, and to be able to support him in his journey through photography - using images to tell the story of what he does, and why it's important is incredibly rewarding.

Powertech provides education, services, analytics, products and system integration to reduce carbon footprints. They work in both commercial and retail spaces, and are the ultimate guides for navigating the landscape of sustainable energy. It's hard to break down everything they do in a singular post, but if you're interested just go check out their website or get in touch with them. What a gem of a business to shoot for. Thanks to Anup and the entire Powertech team for what they do and being so amazing to work with on the day! A couple of cheeky bts snippets attached from our shoot. And a big thanks to Aiden Smith for the assist on a packed schedule

Btw those batteries on the table, are portable solar batteries : )

Some BTS at the amazing for a shoot with the dynamo that's Hayley Osborne, owner of Social Soul who specialises in marketing, socials and strategy! This is the fourth shoot I've done with Hayley, and every single shoot is super fast paced, exciting, challenging, tiring and a blast. Super blessed to work with other business owners with amazing energy. And a big thanks to Hayley's assistant; Elysia for her great assistance on the day too.

Stay tuned for the final shots hooooooo!
