Photography, but not as you know it. "Some Secrets on Photography" at Francisco Carolinum in Linz shifts the focus away from images to processes, materials, and what usually stays hidden.

More on Viennacultgram.

Emma Hummerhielm Carlén’s By the Wall at the STRABAG Art Site Strabag ART takes everyday imagery and transforms it into something softer, more poetic, and slightly out of reach. Working between photography and object, her wax-treated images feel like memories in transition, while the reflective space and sculptural elements add another layer of subtle distortion.

I visited with IgersAustria during a private tour with the artist—here’s why this understated show is worth your time.

Careless people, broken illusions, and a story that refuses to stay in the past. Open House Theatre Vienna’s The Great Gatsby at Theater Spielraum is a stripped-back, immersive staging with Sam Kozeluh delivering Fitzgerald’s text with striking clarity and a strong ensemble bringing the characters’ quiet destructiveness into focus, this is less about glamour and more about what remains once it fades. I had the chance to photograph a rehearsal and move freely through the space, which made the experience even more intense. Definitely worth seeing while it’s on.

Some stories refuse to stay politely in the past. The Great Gatsby is one of them, still circling around questions of longing, illusion, and the quiet damage people leave behind. Vienna’s current s…

From delivery riders’ jackets to industrial workers and a painter claiming her space: Work in Progress at Dom Museum Wien isn’t an easy exhibition, but it’s one that stays with you.
I visited last week and rarely have I seen such a wide range of perspectives on what work really means today. Why it’s worth seeing, even if it’s uncomfortable, is in the article.

Turbulence in the Air: Boeing! Boeing! ✈️
Art for Charity Art for Charity Vienna brings Marc Camoletti’s classic farce back to Vienna, and on stage it’s even funnier than the film. Razor-sharp timing, door-slamming precision, and a cast that keeps the chaos airborne from start to finish. I photographed the dress rehearsal, and all images in my blog post are my own.

Some plays just lodge themselves in your system early and never really leave. Boeing! Boeing! is one of mine. I first fell for it as a kid watching the film version with Tony Curtis and Jerry Lewis…

New on the blog: The Market of the Masters – How the Art Market Shaped Art History

I visited the exhibition Noble Desires at the Garden Palace Liechtenstein and it tells art history from a perspective museums don’t always emphasize: money.

From Roman copies of Greek sculptures to Renaissance workshop production, from early art markets in Antwerp to Amsterdam’s booming middle-class collectors – the exhibition shows that art has always been closely tied to trade, demand and clever market strategies.

A fascinating reminder that art history is not only about genius and inspiration, but also about networks, collectors, dealers and markets.

Plant photography, but not as you know it. 🌿

Two Views on Plants at the Natural History Museum Vienna turns blossoms and stems into spatial experiences you can almost reach out and touch. Botanical photography for skeptics – and a surprisingly powerful lesson in how we see.

Premiering tonight at Theater Drachengasse (Bar & Co): My Old Lady is more than an apartment problem. Vienna Theatre Project brings Israel Horovitz’s sharp, darkly funny three-hander to Vienna with powerhouse performances by Kathy Tanner (Mathilde), Bronwynn Mertz-Penzinger (Chloé) and Dave Moskin (Mathias), directed by Joanna Godwin-Seidl of Vienna theatre project

Tonight, Theater Drachengasse premieres My Old Lady in the smaller, cozier of its two performance spaces, Bar & Co. And yes, “cozy” is the polite word for “you’re so close to the actors you can…

Bruce Gilden polarises, and his exhibition at WestLicht WestLicht. Schauplatz für Fotografie leans fully into that tension. I went to see the exhibition today. Extreme close-ups, harsh flash, zero distance. His portraits confront rather than invite, often crossing the line from encounter into unease. They are not my personal taste, yet seen in large format the images are undeniably powerful and unmistakably his. The show doesn’t offer comfort or answers, but it does something more interesting: it forces you to stay with the question of how far a photographic gaze is allowed to go.
