An ibex making its way down a steep and snowy cliffside.

Although they are seen every now and then, wolves are struggling to return to Austria, hesitant to form a pack and become resident here once more. In 2020, our wolf population was estimated at around 20 individuals.

Most carnivores with large spatial requirements face lots of conflict with people, including persecution, and wolves are no exception. Because of frequent livestock killing, certain regions here even allow the hunting of wolves.

Unfortunately, these situations aren't quick or easy to solve, but we will get there. Personally, I'd love to see more wildlife, including wolves, return to Austria. Let's make it happen.
