Secrets of the Fiaker

I had the unique experience of going on a Fiaker tour in Veinna, Austria. Fiakers are a unique piece of Viennese culture and tradition.

In America, the cowboy is a symbol of the American West. They are known for their pride, work ethic, individualism, and their deep love for the animals they have a partnership with in their day-to-day life. It was easy to see those same characteristics in the coachmen and hands at the stable. Much like cowboys were integral in building the American West, the Fiaker has been integral in building the city of Vienna for centuries. The first Fiaker license in Vienna was issued in 1693 under the reign of Leopold I.

The stable is located in an industrial part of the city where carriages were once the main mode of transportation to get the workers to their jobs. During our tour, I learned that the majority of these carriages are over 100 years old. In the rare occurrence they go to auction, they commonly bring over 60,000 euros. It was evident that the coachmen took pride in cleaning and preparing their carriages for the day.

Naturally, I had to ask a few questions about the challenges of working with horses in a such a public environment. They deal with the same burdens of fighting animal rights extremists to keep their culture alive. It was evident that they pride themselves on the care and welfare of their horses. The company I visited is now on its fourth generation.

The Fiaker creates a bridge into the world of horses, agriculture and history for tourists from all over the world. I am thankful I was able to experience a day in their life.

We are a week out from heading to Las Vegas for the 2023 Wrangler National Finals Rodeo. 5h2 Backdoor Johnny is making her 2nd trip in the Ba****ck Riding. 930 Umm and 04H T-Wrecks are making their 1st trip in the Bull Riding.

The fall colors really stole the show today at SS Ranch. Wisconsin winters might be cold, but other parts of the country do not get to experience a fall that looks like this, so you have to appreciate it while it's here.
