Lyall Gardiner Weddings Documentary Wedding Photography | Portraiture | Europe, UAE & South Africa I photograph what’s real. My background in film informs how I work.

After more than two decades working on high-pressure, large-scale film productions, I approach photography with the same mindset: the best moments are unscripted. Not staged or over-directed, whether it’s a wedding day or a portrait session. Most of the time you won’t even notice me there, and that’s intentional. The focus is on people, how they interact, and what happens naturally. I’m always awa

re of light, timing, movement, and what happens next. On the day, that translates into a calm, steady presence. I step in when needed, but more often I step back. For weddings, that means documenting the day as it happens. From the larger moments to the quieter ones that often go unnoticed. For portraiture, it’s about creating space for people to be themselves, without pressure or performance. I take the time to understand what matters to you, so that being photographed never feels forced or intrusive. When that trust is there, you stop thinking about the camera, and it shows in the images. www.lyallgardiner.com

A rooftop first look. Sneakers instead of formal shoes. And a historic tram carrying the wedding party through the streets of Vienna. Laura & Nathi’s wedding day was warm, playful, and unmistakably theirs. From their home in the 18th district to Prater Park and back again, the city became part of the story.

Their full wedding journey is live on my blog. Take a look https://www.lyallgardiner.com/married-on-a-historic-tram-moving-through-vienna/

There’s a particular kind of ease when two people are completely at home with each other. That was Laura and Nathi from the start.

Traditionally, weddings are planned around how they’ll look. But that’s introduced a different kind of pressure. Not to miss anything. Not to get it wrong.

At the same time, couples are asking me for photographs that feel natural. In a way, a wedding now exists in two versions. The one that’s lived, and the one that’s seen afterwards. More and more, I’m seeing a shift towards unscripted weddings. Still planned, but with less managing, and more space to actually experience the day as it happens.

I’ve written a short piece on what I’ve been noticing, and why it matters to how your wedding is experienced and photographed. https://www.lyallgardiner.com/the-shift-towards-unscripted-weddings/

For a long time, most weddings followed a fairly predictable structure. Timelines were tight. Key moments were clearly defined. There was a sense of how things should occur, and most decisions were made to keep everything moving smoothly from one part of the day to the next.

My #1 tip for a more relaxed wedding day?

Take fifteen minutes alone straight after the ceremony. Step away. Let it land. No guests. Just the two of you. That moment anchors everything that follows.

Some wedding days unfold in a single place.
Laura & Nathi’s moved through a city.

From a historic tram carrying their ceremony through the streets of Vienna, to an intimate celebration at home surrounded by the people who matter most, their day felt alive, personal, and completely their own.

There’s something powerful about a wedding that doesn’t stay still.
The shifting light, the changing scenery, the quiet moments in between stops. It all becomes part of the story.

When Laura & Nathi told me they wanted to marry while moving through the heart of historic Vienna on a vintage tram, I knew we were creating something timeless. This wasn’t just a wedding; it was a nomadic celebration.

The quiet rattle of the tracks, the changing cityscape outside the windows, the intimacy of their closest friends enclosed in polished wood and glass... it was pure cinematic romance.

The secret to a seamless wedding day is the foundation.

I spend time with my couples before the wedding, understanding the venue, the flow of the day, and the dynamics between the people in the room.

So when the day arrives, nothing feels forced.
No over-directing. No unnecessary pressure.

Just space to be present, because everything else has already been taken care of.

Some moments feel right in colour.
Others feel stronger in black and white.

When editing a wedding gallery, I usually let the image decide.

Sometimes colour carries the warmth of the light, the flowers, and the atmosphere of the room. Other times, removing colour allows the emotion to come forward more clearly.

The expression.
The light.
The gesture.

Both have their place in telling the story of a wedding day.

Some wedding venues carry centuries of stories within their walls.

Lily & Freddie chose a 13th-century Franciscan monastery in the heart of Vienna, a place filled with history and character. Family and friends travelled from Austria, the UK, and the US to celebrate together in this remarkable setting.

There is something special about photographing a wedding in a place where generations of stories have unfolded before.
