In this video we conclude the work on the Japanese lantern mound. A large maple needs work, a Fuji cherry is brought back into shape, boxwoods and grasses are cut back and a lot of general maintenance is undertaken. We are left with a well balanced, mature and spacious moss covered mound. We think this is one of our best videos to date, so enjoy and happy gardening!

This week we look at a week in the life of Our Japanese Garden Escape. There are always countless jobs to do in a garden and maintenance is forever on-going. This, however, is the joy of having a garden that is constantly evolving and changing with the seasons and over time in general. Watch the delicate pruning of the Kanzan cherry trees, preparation of the front Zen pond for autumn, shaping black bamboo for the first time and some impromptu boxwood clipping. Relax, enjoy and happy gardening!

In this video we tackle the most unkept and poorly maintained section of our Japanese garden. We focus on a mound that has been deliberately left unattended for a while to promote the cultivation and growth of moss. A wide variety of Japanese plants are found on this mound, many of which need pruning and shaping, others cutting back and some that need to go altogether. Ferns need to be removed, one maple needs a lot of work, weeds need to go, a stone lamp needs saving and moss needs space to grow.

At Our Japanese Garden Escape we are very fortunate to have about 30 mature spruces between 90 and 100 feet tall. These provide us with a beautiful little forest area and shelter around our plot. A couple of these trees are actually in our car parking area and so need to be professionally removed. This video is full of action showing how our tree surgeon expertly fells the trees in sections two meters from the road. Anyone that would like to know how to chop down trees in difficult locations that cannot just be dropped, will really enjoy this video.

This week we undertake the mammoth task of clearing out and reorganising the lava stone mound. As one of the largest mounds in the garden, it has been left unattended and neglected for quite a while. The original plants no longer have any room to grow or to breath, ferns and weeds have taken over and many of the conifers need pruning. Watch as the space becomes peaceful and flowing once again and some of the lava stones can be seen once more.

A little break from the ordinary this week with our newest video which is all about pruning a Japanese Quince. Typically, our videos are full of useful information and tips and Teresa talks through each step she takes. This video is full of the same useful hints and methods, but we have decided to shoot it silently. There is no commentary and no music, just Teresa doing her thing and transforming an overgrown bush into a pruned piece of art. You get to listen to the wonderful sounds of nature in the garden and the sound of sheers chopping away. We hope it provides some relaxation and lets you unwind transporting you to a place of peace and calm which is what all gardens, especially Japanese are all about. Enjoy!

This video covers the tricky task of pruning a Japanese Dissectum maple. Dissectum maples are typically dome shaped, dense and droop towards the ground. We look at one way of pruning to avoid creating a typical mushroom shape as well as how to lift the canopy off the ground and reduce dominant growth.

This video explores the reality behind maintaining and keeping a pristine garden. In most gardening videos including ours the garden tends to appear spotless and perfectly manicured. The reality is that a lot goes on behind the scenes to achieve this. This video looks at what we are faced with when returning to our garden following a three week holiday.
