It was a moody day with heavy rainfalls on Stewart Island, when a kākā came for a surprise visit and landed on the deck. Rushed out with the camera, right lens & settings to capture the encounter before it disappeared as fast as it came. Unexpectedly, we got to hang out during a solid 15 mins - one more unique experience “made in New Zealand” 🦜🌿

The New Zealand kākā (parrot in Māori) is another endangered species coming from the native forests of New Zealand. As cute as they are though, no feeding them as it can result in metabolic bone disease in kākā chicks, putting a further risk to the conservation efforts made in NZ

A year ago, the perfect scenario unfolded as New Zealand was slowly reopening and I was skiing in the Southern Hemisphere for the first time - Queenstown & Wanaka offering awesome ski resorts ⛷🏂

Prior to that, Austria was my go to country for winter sports and I think this photo may just explain why…at 2809m high, it shows the scale and mood of the Tyrolean Alps. You can peek to see the highest ski lift on the right, emerging just enough from the morning fog 🗻

Aerial drone shot of spectacular native trees in a New Zealand rainforest? 🌲🌳

Handheld shot of one of the most desirable native shrub in New Zealand? 🌱🌿

Either way, I found it fascinating as it looks like green skyscrapers fighting for day light in a congested environment.

Tongariro National Park is another UNESCO World Heritage site in New Zealand, with the distinction of dual status for both its natural and cultural significance.

The Tongariro crossing, a 20km hike one way, is regarded as one of the top 10 single-day treks in the world, passing over the volcanic terrain where 452 volcanoes are dotted around the perimeter. This is where all but 3 of the world’s 25 largest volcanic eruptions of the last 11,700 years have occurred 🌋. The environment and weather conditions are unforgiving and can be fatal.

You would normally struggle to get such views without tens of people obstructing it and making it somehow less captivating - one of the pros of living in NZ during a pandemic. And what a place to make epic memories 📸

Tongariro National Park is another UNESCO World Heritage site in New Zealand, with the distinction of dual status for both its natural and cultural significance.

The Tongariro crossing, a 19.4km hike one way, is regarded as one of the top 10 single-day treks in the world, passing over the volcanic terrain where 452 volcanoes are dotted around the perimeter. This is where all but 3 of the world’s 25 largest volcanic eruptions of the last 11,700 years have occurred 🌋. The environment and weather conditions are unforgiving and fatal.

You would normally struggle to get such views without tens of people obstructing it and making it somehow less captivating - the lucky side of living in NZ during a global pandemic.

An epic place to make memories 📸

Back in the bush, this time on the less popular Tuatapere Hump Ridge track. Situated at the extremity of the South Island of New Zealand, it consists of 61kms over 3 days (including 1km of ascent on day 1) - lots of rain, ankle deep mud and sandflies. You may wonder why bother? Well this track is set to become the latest great walk of NZ with upcoming investments to make it more accessible. While tramping, you are right in the heart of native forest, with views of the Tasman sea, crossings of historic viaducts and the epic NZ’s wildlife…another must do in New Zealand 🙌

McLean falls is another spectacular place to visit in the Southland of New Zealand. The variety of forest, shrubs, dark-green moody rocks and native birds encountered to get to the waterfall makes the journey all the more special.

Te Rerenga Wairua | Cape Reinga

Geographically, it is the separation marker between the Tasman Sea and the Pacific Ocean. Spiritually, the Māori belief that the cape is the point where the spirits of the dead enter the underworld.

Adding to this the views, cliffs and the lighthouse, it is with no surprise the cape is on the tentative list of the UNESCO world heritage sites.

If you visited New Zealand and don’t recognise this little fella (30g only), I’d argue you haven’t been to New Zealand.

The yellow laces of my hiking boots were “attacked” twice by this Toutouwai - clearly convinced it was either an agressive choice of colour in the bush or maybe it was food 🤔.

Also known as the New Zealand Robin, it is a protected endemic species. Therefore don’t feed it, but keep wearing laces on your hiking boots 😅.

🇬🇧 Normally this spot can be filled with up to 1200 pairs of gannets nesting from August to March. Once the chicks hatch and mature, they grow juvenile feathers and being to exercise their wings in preparation for the one-shot jump off the cliff 🤞

🇬🇧 Te Matua Ngahere | Father of the Forest 🌳

This sleeping giant, estimated to be between 1500 and 2000 years old, has the biggest girth of any tree in New Zealand. Greatly revered by the Māori, this giant kauri tree is continuously watched over by local Māori Guardians.

The antecedents of the kauri tree appeared during the Jurassic period after all 🦖🦕🐾

Some soft light at sunset while looking straight ahead towards Antarctica - the Catlins coast always delivers on the views. You may spot the local seals, penguins and other seabirds from up there too 🦭🐾
