Back in the days when I was much more active on social media, I came across a portrait of Topaz Arbel on Zachar Rise’s profile. I was instantly fascinated. There was something timeless and almost mythical about her appearance. She gave me strong Lord of the Rings vibes — as if an elf had stepped out of a fantasy world and into reality.
Topaz lives in England, and when the opportunity arose to bring her to Český Krumlov for a photo shoot, I was genuinely excited. This special encounter was made possible by Svetlana Frolikova, who organized the shoot and brought us together.
When Topaz finally stood in front of my camera, the presence that had captivated me in that portrait was very much real. Some people possess a rare aura — a combination of grace, mystery, and character that transcends photography itself.
One detail that always stayed with me was her eyes. Topaz often wears contact lenses because she does not particularly like her natural eye color. Yet, to me, those very eyes are part of what makes her so unique. We are often our own harshest critics, noticing imperfections that others never see. What she may view as a flaw only adds to the individuality and unmistakable character that make her unforgettable.
This image was created in Český Krumlov in 2019. It remains one of those photographs that reminds me that photography is not only about light, technique, or composition. Sometimes it is simply about meeting extraordinary people and being fortunate enough to capture a fleeting moment of who they are.
Some photographs are taken. Others are remembered.

I am often asked whether my photographs are “AI-generated” because some AI detectors classify them as edited or partially AI-generated.

The answer is simple: photography has never been a purely technical process. Even in the days of the darkroom, photographers adjusted contrast, chose crops, dodged and burned areas, and shaped the final image. Great photographers did not simply capture images—they crafted them.

Today, many photographers use tools such as Photoshop, Lightroom, Evoto, or AI-assisted retouching software. These tools do not replace the photographer. They are simply modern instruments that help speed up workflows and perform technical corrections more efficiently.

The image is still created through vision, light, composition, timing, communication with the subject, and the photographer’s creative decisions. A camera does not create art by itself—nor does software.

AI detectors are also far from perfect. They work on probabilities and frequently misclassify genuine photographs, including heavily edited or even traditional film images, as AI-generated.

For me, the most important fact remains unchanged: the photograph is created at the moment of exposure. Post-processing has been part of photographic history for more than a century. The tools have changed, but the creative intention behind them has not.

Veronica at Atelier Seidel, Český Krumlov
This photograph was created at the legendary Atelier Seidel in Český Krumlov – one of the oldest preserved daylight photography studios in Europe. Since the late nineteenth century, photographers have worked here using nothing but natural light, long before flash systems became part of everyday photography.
The historic glass architecture, original backdrops, and authentic furniture still tell the story of an era when photography was a craft shaped by patience, skill, and artistic vision. It was a special honor for me to conduct a workshop in this museum and photograph in the very place where photographic history was written more than a century ago.
In this image, Veronica becomes a bridge between past and present, captured in the soft daylight of a studio that has inspired generations of photographers.

Mask and Memory German/English
Tonya, 1992

Mask and Memory
Tonya, 1992
This photograph was created in 1992 with Tonya, during a period when photography was still deeply connected to darkroom experimentation and the physical nature of film. It was captured on Kodak SFX film using a red filter, producing an effect reminiscent of classic infrared photography: luminous skin tones, soft tonal transitions, and a dreamlike, almost otherworldly atmosphere.
The composition combines portraiture, mask, and symbolism. Inspired by the surrealist imagery of Man Ray, the image explores the space between identity and transformation, between what is revealed and what remains hidden. The mask is not merely a prop but a reflection of an inner state. Tonya appears both present and distant, suspended somewhere between reality and dream.
The distinctive visual character was achieved entirely through analogue techniques, long before digital manipulation became commonplace. It is precisely these imperfections, together with the unique grain structure of the film, that give the photograph its timeless and poetic presence.
