↠ When your #1 destination becomes your biggest lesson in expectations ↞

I’d seen the photos. Gosausee, the most beautiful lake in Austria, turquoise water, dramatic Dachstein backdrop, absolute perfection. That’s why I came to the Salzkammergut in the first place.

I climbed up from the parking lot, walked past the Gasthaus, kept looking around thinking, where is it? And then I looked down. The lake was half empty. The weather was meh. Not the postcard.

I almost didn’t even walk around the Vorderer Gosausee. But we did it anyway. And somewhere between the pebble shore and the tree line and the clouds doing whatever they wanted, I stopped being disappointed and just… walked.

My number one pick ended up being my least favourite of the trip. But you make the best out of what’s in front of you, and sometimes that’s enough.

Also, the hotel directly on the lake never answered my booking request. At the time, annoying. In hindsight, maybe a gift. 😂

Fleischhauerei Zauner in Bad Goisern, seit 1809. One of those traditional Austrian storefronts the Salzkammergut quietly does better than anywhere else, all wood balconies, hand-painted signs, and a butcher shop that’s outlived empires. The light was perfect. The symmetry begged for it. And he turned the other way to shoot something off-frame entirely.

Maybe that’s the whole thing about slow travel through Austria. The shot you came for is rarely the one you leave with.

↠ I’m a photographer, and this is what catches my eye in Austria. 🎞️ ↞

Being a photographer means you never really look at the world the same way twice. You’re constantly scanning for light, textures, and the stories hidden in the details.
But spending 4 days shooting around Salzkammergut and Ausseerland? It completely caught me off guard. Exploring home turned out to be way more magical than I ever imagined.

Instead of chasing the classic postcard views, I found myself pulling over to capture the quiet moments - the sun hitting a weathered wooden boathouse, the contrast of wild roses against deep emerald water, old ivy-covered alleyways, and those perfect, timeless green shutters. Turns out, I didn’t need to catch a flight to find inspiration. Everything I wanted to shoot was right here in my own backyard. 🌲🏔️
