Lonely Tree

Astrophotography and tropical Sri Lanka don't necessarily mix. Rain, high humidity, and rarely clear nights are normal. Nevertheless, I left no stone unturned to capture at least one photo of the night sky. In Habarana, my patience was rewarded.

Einsamer Baum

Astrofotografie und das tropische Sri Lanka passt nicht unbedingt zusammen. Regen, hohe Luftfeuchtigkeit und kaum klare Nächte sind normal. Trotzdem ließ ich nichts unversucht, um nicht zumindest ein Foto vom Nachthimmel aufzunehmen. In Habarana wurde ich für meine Geduld belohnt.

Road to the Milky Way

This road connects the lush east of La Palma with the barren west. It winds its way in countless switchbacks from the sea up to 2,400 meters. I've driven here in snow and sweltering heat, but at night, when the tourists have long since returned to their accommodations, it reveals itself at its most beautiful: an extension of the Milky Way. Reconnect to the Stars!

Straße zur Milchstraße

Diese Straße verbindet den üppigen Osten La Palmas mit dem kargen Westen. Sie schlängelt sich in unzähligen Serpentinen vom Meer bis auf 2.400 Meter Höhe. Ich bin hier schon bei Schnee und brütender Hitze gefahren, doch nachts, wenn die Touristen längst in ihre Unterkünfte zurückgekehrt sind, zeigt sie sich von ihrer schönsten Seite: eine Verlängerung der Milchstraße.

Train travel in Sri Lanka is still an adventure. Passing by the deep green tea plantations, the train slowly made its way through the mountains. But suddenly, a massive tree—uprooted by the heavy rain—blocked the tracks. With combined efforts, the tracks were cleared after more than four hours, and the journey to Kandy continued.

Wurzeln und Flügel

Jeder sollte seinen Kindern Wurzeln und Flügel auf den Weg geben. Das waren zumindest meine Gedanken, als ich in dieser kalten Nacht am höchsten Punkt der Kanareninsel La Palma stand. Die karge Landschaft lenkt den Blick unweigerlich auf das helle Band unserer Heimatgalaxie, unsere Milchstraße. So wie die Wurzeln uns auf den Boden der Tatsachen zurückholen, so sehr insiriert uns der Blick in den Sternenhimmel. Jeder Mensch sollte diesen Blick genießen können.

Roots and Wings

Everyone should give their children both roots and wings. That was what I was thinking on this cold night, standing at the highest point of the Canary Island of La Palma. The barren landscape naturally draws your gaze to the bright band of our home galaxy - the Milky Way. Just as roots ground us in reality, the view of the starry sky lifts and inspires us. Everyone should have the chance to experience that view. Reconnect to the Stars!

Where My Heart Beats Faster

I’ve stood in this place many times before, most recently a year ago. It’s a place of silence - barren and cold. But nowhere else in Europe do the stars shine with such clarity. Nowhere else does the Milky Way feel so close you could almost touch it.
And nowhere else do I feel more at home than beside the mighty telescopes of the . Speechless, I gaze toward the sky and lose myself in infinity. Reconnect to the Stars!

Wo mein Herz schneller schlägt

Viele Male stand ich schon an diesem Ort, zuletzt vor einem Jahr. Es ist ein Ort voller Stille, karg und kalt. Doch nirgendwo sonst in Europa sieht man die Sterne in dieser Klarheit. Nirgendwo sonst fühlt sich die Milchstraße so zum Greifen nahe an und nirgendwo sonst fühle ich mich wohler als neben den mächtigen Teleskopen der . Sprachlos blicke ich Richtung Himmel und verliere mich in der Unendlichkeit.

Moonlight

There wasn't much time left that night. I had a lot planned, wanting to capture the entire arch of the Milky Way over Capitol Reef National Park, but storm clouds kept moving across the sky. And then there was our moon, the frequent enemy of my photography. As it rose above the horizon, it outshone the mighty Milky Way, and my photo night in Utah came to an end.

Mondlicht

Es blieb nicht mehr viel Zeit in dieser Nacht. Ich hatte mir viel vorgenommen, wollte den gesamten Bogen der Milchstraße über dem Capitol Reef Nationalpark einfangen, aber immer wieder zogen Gewitterwolken über den Himmel. Und dann ist da noch unser Mond als oftmaliger Spielverderber meiner Art der Fotografie. Als er sich über dem Horizont erhob, überstrahlte er die mächtige Milchstraße und meine Foto-Nacht in Utah ging zu Ende.

Sterne zählen

Zentraleuropa ist unglaublich zersiedelt und in nahezu jedem Tal stören künstliche Lichtquellen den Blick zu den Sternen. In den USA findet man fernab der Großstädte allerdings noch menschenleere Gegenden. Dort kann man in einer klaren Nacht rund 6.000 Sterne mit freiem Auge erkennen. Meine Kamera schafft noch viel mehr und auch unsere Nachbargalaxie Andromeda zeigt sich in all ihrer Pracht.

Counting Stars

Central Europe is incredibly urbanized, and in almost every valley, artificial light sources obscure the view of the stars. In the USA, however, you can still find deserted areas far away from the big cities. There, on a clear night, you can see around 6,000 stars with the naked eye. My camera can see many more, and our neighboring galaxy, Andromeda, also reveals itself in all its glory.
