A Tiny Spark: Pikachu Nudibranch

The real-life Pikachu of the sea!
This macro shot of Thecacera pacifica, commonly known as the Pikachu Nudibranch, photographed while diving in Tulamben, Bali.
This tiny, vibrant yellow sea slug, contrasted by its rhinophores (sensory organs), is one of my favorite finds. The bokeh creates a magical, golden backdrop, highlighting the intricate details of this magnificent creature and its surrounding habitat.
A true gem of the Indo-Pacific reef.

Donut worry 🍩 be glazed

Found this little sea slug trying its best to look like a gourmet, striped donut in the deep waters of Tulamben, Bali.
I tried to order it with extra sprinkles, but the delivery service down here is terrible.

Seriously though, isn't this Donut Nudibranch just glazy with beauty? A truly magnificent find, perfectly posed for the camera.

Donut worry, I took the photo and swam away quickly so it could get back to its extremely slow and glamorous life.

Im sexy and I know it 🦐

Okay, confession time!
Before this dive, I had this ridiculously funny image in my head:

A tiny shrimp with serious swagger, strutting its stuff like it just heard 'I'm Sexy and I Know It' blasting through the reef.

I imagined this little dude totally owning a stage somewhere between a fiery underworld disco and a chilly celestial ballet.

And look at this!

This spicy little shrimp is totally giving off those vibes, right? Spotlight's on, and this tiny dancer is working it! 😂🍤

The Epic Tale of Underwater Pyrotechnics (and a Very Patient Goby)

I decided to bring the New Year's Eve firework underwater. My brilliant (and slightly unhinged) idea was to recreate the dazzling spectacle of a fireworks display, but with a decidedly aquatic twist.
Hours. Literal, actual, mind-numbing hours were spent hunched over my craft table. My significant other probably thought I'd finally lost it, muttering to myself about "subaquatic pyrotechnics" and "light refraction." I even bought a 3D printer for this endeavor! Because, naturally, the only way to achieve true underwater fireworks is with custom-printed mounts and bespoke filters crafted from who-knows-what household items. My apartment looked less like a home and more like a mad scientist's lab.
Then, during one of my underwater expeditions, I saw him. The goby. Just sitting there, completely oblivious to my artistic torment. And in that moment, bathed in the glow of my makeshift underwater fireworks, a divine inspiration struck.
Suddenly, the Sea sq**rt (which looked exactly like a fancy champagne glass) and the tiny eggs (perfectly mimicking champagne bubbles) all clicked into place. With my homemade "fireworks" twinkling in the background, this unassuming goby became the unwitting star of my New Year's photo.

The Seahorse of Unexpected Delights
Ah, the legend of "The Seahorse." It all started like any other dive, filled with the promise of underwater wonders. My dive guide, bless his optimistic heart, asked for my wish list. "Wish list?" I scoffed internally, "I'm not on a shopping spree, mate!" Outwardly, I replied with a casual shrug, "Nah, no list. Just show me whatever you find, as long as it's in a good, photogenic position. The only thing I absolutely, positively do not want is a seahorse. Those things always sit there, hunched over, staring at the seabed like they've just lost their car keys."
My guide, of course, took this as a personal challenge. I swear I saw a mischievous twinkle in his eye, even through his mask, as he gestured wildly. And there it was. A seahorse. My nemesis. And to add insult to injury, it was perfectly positioned! I could practically hear his underwater chuckle, a silent "Gotcha!" echoing through the water. He watched, clearly amused, as my initial lack of enthusiasm morphed into a grudging admiration.
And so, from the depths of my "absolutely not" list, emerged one of my favorite photos. Proof that sometimes, the universe (or at least, a very cheeky dive guide) has a much better plan for your camera roll than you do.
