I have a thing for horses roaming on remote islands. The Faroe horses are living the dream on Mykines, part of the Faroe Islands. Not streets, no cars, few people. Just nature, mountains, sheep, loads of birds and of course Ponies! However the climate is harsh, but the Faroese horse can handle this.

Haflinger Herd in the middle of the Tyrolese alps at sunrise. The horses are in the shadow of a higher mountain, where as the mountains of the opposite valley are already in bright sunshine.

Haflinger horses spending their summer in freedom on high alpine pastures. The herd in the second picture is on 2400 m altitude. The weather conditions in the alps in also in summer harsh, the nights are very fresh and als most freezing, during the day the horses are exposed to the strong sun, no shelter for rain or frequent thunder storms. @ Österreichische Alpen

Haflinger horses go for a refreshing drink. Weather in the mountains can be unpredictable and also in summer if can rain hard in a short amount of time. The hillsides get flooded and turn into tiny river banks, water breaks out from underground sources. The horses always know where to find the freshest water 💦

After posting many photos of ponies from the british isles, it is important to also keep in mind, that there are many free horses in Europe which are still unkown to many. Even in the native countries, some breeds are only locally known. This is the case with the Castillonnais horse in Southern France, a hardy and rustic medium sized and medium b***d horse from the Pyrenees. Their cousin, the black Merens horse, is better known to the community, but unfortunately the Castillonnais has less fame and also less births per year. The Castillonais or Cheval Ariègeois de Castillon, also called Cheval du Biros or Saint-Gironnais, is an ancient breed which is nowadays critically endangered.

The white ponies of Eriskay spend their summers on the mountains of their island and the winter on the shores and in the village. Eriskay Ponys are critically endangered, yet one of the oldest native horses breeds of UK and henceforth a living heritage.

Free living Welsh Pony stallions showing off towards a bachelor stallion who has an eye on his family band. Wales is probably one of the few places in Europe where you can observe “wild” behaviour 😎
