So far, I have learned to walk three times in this life.

And all for the same reason: hip surgeries. The first of the surgeries was at the time of my birth and since then, year after year, my way of walking has been quite different from that of the others.

During my childhood in Venezuela, my aunt Cocó showed me the works of wonderful Latin American painters and among others was the work of Frida Kahlo. I clearly remember the first time she told me: “you are just like her”.

The years went by and I was growing and along with the growth, my body was changing and my limp too. After the second surgery, the ground straightened out a little more under my feet, and already on the way to adulthood, my aunt's artist friends -my filmmaker aunt, my artist aunt- when they met me they also said that I was “just like Frida”.

Time passed and life changed. Living in Argentina, together with a group of artist friends we formed a small production company moved by the pure desire to do things together, and thus “Alúna” was born. Among other projects, we made this small tribute to Frida (Idea of my dear friend Sebastián Mattheus, great painter). Lucy Martin was in charge -impeccably- of the wardrobe and make-up part and Agustina Paganini did the directing and backstage assistance wonderfully. We all choose what, when and how.

But the question haunted me and was mixed with a deep feeling of admiration and perplexity: did I really look like Frida?

Arte en Foco, the photography school where I was teaching at the time, lent us a studio, asking us in exchange for the students in the basic courses to see how we took the photos. We all agreed and it was a truly unforgettable experience.

I clearly remember when a student said in a very low voice to a classmate: “look, she is so involved in the role of Frida that she even limps”. And laughing out loud on the inside I walked to the bathroom to change my clothes for the next photo.

Without desire, there would be no art.

This is an invitation:

In a month and a half it will be two years since I arrived in the United Arab Emirates. Two years that sometimes feel like ten or a thousand, of so many things that I have experienced and transformed in every aspect of my life, especially professionally.

Photography has allowed me to reach places and people that I otherwise would not have known how to get to and also to understand human emotions in a very special way. My own and those of others. And I have grown. More than I thought I would grow in a pandemic/post-pandemic time, I feel like I am, somehow, quietly blooming.

Something that flourishes in the middle of the desert... That is the main lesson I have learned in this country: That the circumstance does not define the future and that the adaptation to those ever-changing circumstances is the way to be.

At the end of last year, in the midst of moving from Dubai to Abu Dhabi, in the midst of a lot of intimate search and questioning about my work, the consistency of it, wondering how to proceed in such a different culture, not having any certainty about anything ; In the midst of all this, I understood that my very personal way of entering a new life with all my heart is through personal projects, be they photographic or whatever. That is why I started a project called "The intangible of bees", probably as a search for answers to those existential questions of that moment, because if a bee, under certain conditions, has the possibility of surviving in this desert, then I could survive too. And I understood that everything is a matter of time, care and adaptation.

In the case of the bees that were part of that first part of the project, the care is provided by the Dubai Beekeepers Association, who carry out a titanic task, of such great dimensions that it can go unnoticed due to the immensity of their work. My complete gratitude to them for allowing me to witness their work so full of love and dedication. Because although it seems like a utopia, simply as it is without the pollination of bees, without their existence, ours would not be possible either. We intrinsically depend on them and the fragile balance they maintain on this planet.

One of the photos that emerges from this ongoing project, will be part of the community exhibition "Slice of life", partnering with National Geographic Al Arabiya Magazine and Gulf Photo Plus. The opening will be next Wednesday, September 7th at 7:30 pm at Gulf Photo Plus, Warehouse 36, Alserkal Avenue, Dubai.

See you there.

A month ago, while on holidays in Spain, I have a very warm and sweet conversation with for the podcast of Helen Farmer at

We talked about food, food photography, taking photos of people and we talked about food culture. And above all, how culture shapes our experiences in every aspect of our day to day life.

Punam asked me what was the most difficult food item to photograph and always and forever the answer would be: ice cream. No doubt it's the most challenging thing to work with because you run against time every second of the photoshooting.

The whole show it's full of great conversation. Mine is closing the show, at 1:03 hrs.

Enjoy! (Like a gelato of pistachio 🍦)

P.s: this tremendous apple topped with ice cream was made by the gifted pastry chef in Rosario, Argentina 🤍⚡

"Migratory Birds" is a personal project that began in Rosario, Argentina in 2016 and ended in Dubai, UAE in 2021. Thousands of kilometers traveled through the stories of immigrants, thousands of kilometers traveled by plane to close an idea conceived from my own life as migrant. Each story left a mark on me forever, the mark left on me by those deep connections and coincidences with my own life story. Thanks to the greatest curator that Daniel H. Rey is for opening a space for this beloved and significant project and above all for doing it with such respect and affection and choosing Sumac Space to display it among the incredible works of amazing artists for whom I have so much respect. Thank you from the bottom of this heart of mine. The exhibition can still be seen through the link in bio until June 5.
