SALGEUIRO’s SAMBA NIGHTS: A Saturday Evening Well Spent 🇧🇷
Rio de Janeiro doesn’t just do Carnival - Rio is Carnival!
And nowhere is that more evident than in the samba schools, where passion, rhythm, and a little friendly competition turn rehearsals into full-blown spectacles.
Think of it like a Brazilian football league, but instead of scoring goals, they’re delivering incredible performances with feathers, sequins, and infectious beats. There’s even a Division 1 and a Division 2, meaning yes - samba teams get relegated and promoted just like in sports!
The samba schools are in it to win, with months of preparation leading up to their grand moment at Carnival. It´s serious business and the schools have fans like other sports teams.
Outside of Carnival season, samba schools open their doors for weekend rehearsal nights - aka one of the best things you can do in Rio. We decided to check out Salgueiro, one of the more famous samba schools, and let’s just say… it didn’t disappoint.
The energy? Electric
The music? Non-stop.
The dancing? Highly skilled (I actually know how to dance samba from having been part of three Carnivals).
Estefi, Jacqueline, and I threw ourselves into the rhythm, doing our best to mimic the pros. As seasoned Latinas, the girls are born to move, though this wasn’t Colombian salsa..
The pace? Fast.
The vibe? Unforgettable.
The sweat? Abundant.
Only hair in the soup is that Salgueiro lies in a bad neighbourhood (Andarai) of Rio and getting in and out of it at the early hours of the morning can be a somewhat scary experience.
