FROM BALI TO BOROBUDUR: BUDDHIST MONKS BEGIN 2026 WALK FOR PEACE
In saffron and brown robes, over 50 Buddhist monks mainly from Thailand but also Laos, and Malaysia, with Indonesian supporters, set out on foot for over 500 km from Bali toward Borobudur Temple.
The Indonesia Walk for Peace 2026 is part of Vesakha Sananda 2570 Buddhist Era, a month-long series of Buddhist social, environmental and spiritual programs organised around Vesak Day, on May 31, 2026. Buddhist ascetic walking practice is associated with simplicity, restraint and spiritual discipline.
This year, Bali was chosen as the starting point due of its historical links to Buddhism. Bali’s Provincial Government seeks to present the island as a place of interreligious encounter and spiritual diplomacy. Bali Governor Wayan Koster embraced the walk as a sacred journey aligned with Nangun Sat Kerthi Loka Bali, the administration’s development plan to preserve the sanctity and harmony of Bali’s nature, people, and culture.
In national terms, Indonesia’s Ministry of Religious Affairs highlighted that Indonesia’s diversity should be a source of unity rather than division.
Yesterday, the monks passed through Northwest Bali on 10 May in order to catch the ferry to East Java this morning.
